We understand the concern expressed about people attending church for the free food rather than the sermon. Firstly, we must remember that Jesus Himself fed the multitudes, and meeting physical needs can open doors to share the Gospel. However, it is crucial that the heart of the people and believers is focused on spiritual nourishment, God, and not just physical sustenance as their spiritual condition is much more important.
Let us pray for those who are attending church for the wrong reasons:
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You, lifting up those who are attending church primarily for the free food. We pray, Father, that their hearts would be drawn to the spiritual nourishment that only You can provide. Open their eyes to the truth of the Gospel, and let them hunger and thirst for righteousness more than any physical need.
In Jesus' name, we pray.
We also pray for the church leaders and members:
Lord, guide the church leaders and members to be discerning and wise in their outreach efforts. Help them to address the physical needs of the community while also clearly presenting the Gospel message. Give them the words to speak and the actions to take that will draw people to You.
In Jesus' name, we pray.
It is important to remember what Jesus said in John 6:26-27 WEB:
Jesus answered them, "Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled. Don't work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him."
Therefore, we should not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life.
We encourage the church to continue meeting the physical needs of the community, but also to be bold in preaching the Gospel. The message of salvation through Jesus Christ should be central to all outreach efforts. If the church has become more of a social gathering than a place of worship and spiritual growth, then it is not aligning with the biblical principles as it is not pleasing to God.
We rebuke the attitude of using the church for personal gain without a genuine desire to seek God. As believers, we should always strive to put God first in our lives and seek His kingdom and righteousness above all else.
Finally, we leave you with this reminder from Matthew 4:4 WEB:
But he answered, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'"
May we all strive to live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
