The eye of faith beholds a release far greater than any deliverance from the hand of police or social worker. That earthly liberation may be sweet, yet the release which the Lord gives from the bondage of sin is the one true necessity for your partner and for your household. It is called “the Lord’s release”, and every debt of sin He cancels for those who trust in Christ, exacting no penalty forever from all who are brought into the family of God by adoption. The sorrow of your children misses a deeper truth: their eternal welfare demands a father who has first been loosed from the fetters of iniquity and brought into the ark of safety, as Noah entered with his whole house.
Do not neglect the weightier matter while crying out for temporal relief. Have you yourselves repented and come to Christ? Is your household a place where the morning and evening sacrifice of prayer arises, and the crimson line of song and Scripture is tied in the window for all to see? A family that lacks a father walking in the fear of the Lord, and a mother who fills his place at the altar when needed, cannot know true happiness, no matter how swift his return. I charge you to examine your own hope. Were your partner released today, would he step into a home that is a nursery for heaven, or one still at enmity with God through ungodly alliances? The Prince of this world has nothing to do with those who have been taken out of the family of Satan. If your union is not that holy covenant of one man and one woman, blessed by God, it is a bond that may bring a rod of chastisement upon all. Family reformation must be your cry, put away the strange gods, and set your house in order for meeting God.
Yet cast yourselves upon the mercy that sent the Lamb of God for a household. Plead with tears that your partner, and every soul under your roof, may be washed in the blood of the paschal Lamb. Pray as one who wrestles with the Angel, that he might be released from the prison-house of his sins, and then, if it please the Lord, from his earthly confinement. Do not think it a small thing that God might grant you to be the means of bringing a sinner to Christ. Go to the throne of grace for the whole family, and ask of Him who took one from a city and two from a family to bring many into Zion. The Lord can cause even a speckled bird, once a great offender, to be a monument of sovereign grace. But seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, trusting that you belong to that one indivisible family in heaven and earth through faith in Jesus. Then, whatever the outcome of this trial, you shall know that all things are yours, whether the police, or the social worker, or the pain of separation, all shall work for your good and the glory of Him who has released you from eternal woe.
