Parents not paying application fees to send me to

I am from a poor Asian country and I don't work at the moment due to some problems I faced. A professor from a good Japanese university encouraged me to apply to his PhD program. Since the application money is about 180 USD, I had to ask my parents. But my parents refused saying that Japan is not a good country (they are themselves govt school teachers, no experience in research or foreign travel at all and we live in a poor country with very less tourism): English is not the main language and the work culture is not good. They plainly refused to pay the application fees and will refuse the visa fees and all that. Their refusal has been deeply painful for me and I think I am missing a very good opportunity. **Also, my parents are insisting that I apply only to English Speaking Countries like UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand because my nation was colonized by one of these nations and I can speak English, They don't know that UK and all other countries have very high fees for international students as compared to domestic ones**.

We hear your deep disappointment and frustration, and we stand with you in seeking God’s wisdom and provision in this situation. The opportunity before you is significant, and it is understandable that you feel the weight of your parents’ refusal. However, we must also consider the biblical principles of honoring your parents while trusting God to open doors that no one can shut.

First, we want to acknowledge the tension you feel between your parents’ concerns and your own aspirations. Scripture tells us in Ephesians 6:2-3, *"Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise: 'that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.'" (WEB)* Your parents’ perspective is shaped by their limited experience, but their authority over you is still something God calls you to respect. At the same time, we know that God can work through even the most difficult circumstances to bring about His purposes. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, *"A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps."* (WEB)

We must also address the financial aspect of your request. While your parents’ refusal to pay the application fees is painful, we encourage you to seek God’s provision rather than resentment. Philippians 4:19 assures us, *"My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."* (WEB) Have you considered reaching out to the professor who encouraged you? Many universities have fee waivers or scholarships for international students, especially those from developing countries. It may also be worth exploring external funding sources, such as grants or organizations that support students in your field.

Regarding your parents’ insistence on English-speaking countries, we understand their reasoning, but we also recognize that God’s plans are not limited by language or geography. The Lord can use you wherever He calls you, and Japan may very well be the place He has prepared for you. Acts 17:26-27 tells us, *"He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons, and the boundaries of their dwellings, that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us."* (WEB) God is not confined to English-speaking nations, and His will for your life may lead you to a place your parents do not yet understand.

We also want to gently remind you that your identity and worth are not defined by this opportunity or your parents’ approval. Your value comes from Christ, who loves you and has a plan for your life. Jeremiah 29:11 says, *"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the Lord, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future."* (WEB) Even if this door does not open, God has not abandoned you. He may be preparing something even greater for you.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of this dear one who is seeking Your will and provision. Lord, You see the disappointment and frustration they are carrying, and You know the desires of their heart. We ask that You would give them peace in the midst of this uncertainty and wisdom to navigate their parents’ concerns with honor and grace. Father, if this opportunity in Japan is from You, we ask that You would open the doors and provide the resources needed to pursue it. If it is not Your will, we pray that You would close the door gently and redirect their steps to where You would have them go.

Lord, we also ask that You would soften the hearts of their parents. Give them understanding and a willingness to support their child in ways that align with Your purposes. Help them to see beyond their own limited perspective and trust You with their child’s future. Father, we know that You are a God who provides, and we ask that You would meet every need—financial, emotional, and spiritual—as they seek to follow You.

Above all, Lord, we pray that this one would draw closer to You in this season. Remind them that their worth is found in Christ alone and that You have a plan for their life that is good and full of hope. Give them the strength to wait on You and the faith to trust You even when the path is unclear. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

In the days ahead, we encourage you to continue seeking the Lord through prayer and His Word. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, *"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths."* (WEB) God is faithful, and He will not leave you without direction. Keep your heart open to His leading, and trust that He will make a way where there seems to be no way.

We're right there with you, feeling the sting of your parents' refusal. It's tough when the people we love the most can't see the value of an opportunity that means so much to us. But remember, God sees you, and He's got a plan even in this.

Your parents have their reasons, shaped by their experiences and fears. Let's love them by understanding that, even if we don't agree. We can honor them without compromising our dreams, can't we? Let's keep the lines of communication open, maybe share some articles or stories about Japan and its universities. Who knows, they might come around.

In the meantime, let's not forget to trust God for provision. He's big enough to move mountains, right? Reach out to that professor, explore scholarships, and keep your eyes open for other opportunities. God might just surprise you with how He provides.

And hey, let's not forget to pray. Together, we can lift this situation up to God. He's got a way of working things out, even when we can't see it yet. Let's trust Him, one step at a time.

Lord, we pray for this prayer and family for blessings healing and salvation. Heal and bless. May their lives be a praise and glory unto thee.
Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
