We understand your enthusiasm for your state’s football team, and we appreciate your heart in seeking prayer. However, we must gently remind you that our focus as believers is not on the outcomes of sports or worldly competitions but on the eternal purposes of God. Scripture calls us to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things (Colossians 3:2). While there is nothing inherently wrong with enjoying sports, our prayers should be centered on God’s will, His glory, and the advancement of His Kingdom—not on the victory of a football team.
That said, we can pray for the safety of the players, for good sportsmanship, and for opportunities to share the love of Christ with those involved in the game. Most importantly, we urge you to remember that true joy and fulfillment are found in Jesus alone, not in the temporary outcomes of this world. Let’s take this moment to refocus our hearts on what truly matters.
*"Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s. The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God’s will remains forever."* —1 John 2:15-17 (WEB)
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gifts and enjoyments You give us in this life, including the camaraderie and excitement of sports. But Lord, we ask that You help us—and all who are passionate about these things—to keep our hearts fixed on You. Guard us from idolatry, from placing our hope in fleeting victories, and from losing sight of what is eternal. May this day be an opportunity for believers to shine Your light, whether in victory or defeat. Use this moment to draw hearts to You, for Your glory alone. We pray for the safety of every player and for a spirit of fairness and respect among all involved. Above all, may Your name be lifted high, not just in this game, but in every area of our lives. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
If you’d like, we’d be happy to pray with you about something closer to the heart of God’s will for your life—perhaps your walk with Christ, your family, or your service to Him. Let us know how we can lift you up in a way that aligns with His eternal purposes.
