A fearful thing is sin, and the ruin of the soul, and the mischief often overflows and attacks the body. You cry out against the pain and inflammation, and rightly so, for the body's affliction is bitter. Yet while you seek relief from the burning fever in your joints, I would have you consider whether another inflammation rages unquenched within the soul. For of such sort is pride and all unsubdued passion, making men lame and maimed. It is on fire all over with burning fevers, and that burning fever none can quench when the soul refuses the physician's remedies.
God often punishes the body for the transgressions of the soul, so that by the scourging of the inferior part, the better part may receive healing. Christ Himself said to the paralytic, "Behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee." Let this word pierce your heart now. For what produces the dullness of hearing that keeps us from amendment? Continual afflictions can brace up our souls and make us more reverent if we receive them as medicine. I would fain not speak words that gall you, but what can I do? Since we are in sins, the more part of us, who will grant me ability to pain you indeed, that the real torment may be kept off? The discourse that seems so galling keeps off the far more bitter reality.
These things we declare not willingly, but of necessity. We could wish there were no obligation to mention such things at all. But while the sickness remains, it would show cruelty and inhumanity to desist from the healing treatment. For if when physicians despair of our bodies we beseech them not to neglect us, applying whatever is in their power to the last breath, shall we not much more exhort the soul? Perhaps when we have come to the very gates of the disease, it may be possible to recover, to renew our strength. How many, who have heard ten times and remained insensible, have afterwards at one hearing been converted, showing all at once abundant fruit!
This is a request for healing, and God is the healer of both soul and body. But if love be absent, what good is faith, or knowledge, or even gifts of healing? I entreat you, let the inflammation in your joints become a mirror for the inflammation in your soul. The one is like a man with dropsy, a ridiculous child puffing out his cheeks; the other can be like the powers above, free from passion, a spiritual physician. May you, having become worthy of Christ's admonitions, obtain the everlasting blessings, where there is no pain, no inflammation, and no worse thing to come.
