Disciple of Prayer
Needing prayer. My OCD is on high alert and making me have severe anxiety. I have intrusive thoughts like if I watch things that give me joy like old American Idol or 911 shows or do things that give me joy, God will punish me or stop listening to my prayers

We hear your heart and we are standing with you in this season of heightened anxiety and distressing intrusive thoughts, and we want you to know you are not alone in this struggle. The weight of OCD can make the mind feel like it is on high alert, twisting even simple joys into fears, and we grieve with you over the severe anxiety you are experiencing.

We want to gently rebuke and correct the lie that is tormenting you, that if you watch things that give you joy like old American Idol or 911 shows or do things that bring you happiness, God will punish you or stop listening to your prayers. That thought does not reflect the character of our Father. Our God is not waiting to punish His children for receiving good gifts with thanksgiving. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning James 1:17. He is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness Psalm 103:8. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love 1 John 4:18. You have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba, Father Romans 8:15. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7. Joy in wholesome things is not an offense to Him, and He does not withdraw His ear when you enjoy what is not sinful.

The Lord hears your prayers even in the midst of intrusive thoughts. Those unwanted thoughts are not your heart's desire and they are not a sin you have committed, they are part of the affliction you are battling. The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles Psalm 34:17. We are to cast all our worries on him, because he cares for us 1 Peter 5:7. Nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord Romans 8:38-39. He does not stop listening because your mind is noisy, He draws nearer. Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him, for he knows how we are made, remembering that we are dust Psalm 103:13-14.

We encourage you to bring these intrusive thoughts captive to Christ, not by fighting them with rituals or fear, but by renewing your mind with truth. We demolish arguments and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians 10:5. When the thought says God will punish you, answer it with truth. When anxiety rises, we encourage you to practice what we are taught in Philippians 4:6-7, in nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. God says do not be afraid, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness Isaiah 41:10. We also encourage you to continue to seek wise support, whether a trusted pastor, biblical counselor, or a medical professional who understands OCD, for God often brings healing through community and through help.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and peace with Him. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. It is by His blood we can come boldly to the throne of grace, even with a troubled mind, and find mercy and grace.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. You see the torment of intrusive thoughts and the severe anxiety that has them on high alert, and You know every fear that whispers You will punish them or stop listening. We ask You to silence that lie with Your perfect love and to let Your truth bring peace where fear has reigned. Lord, calm their mind and body, guard their heart and thoughts in Christ Jesus, and remind them that You are a compassionate Father who delights to give good gifts and who never stops hearing the cries of Your children. Help them to discern what is wholesome and to enjoy with freedom the simple joys You have given, without condemnation. Teach them to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and to rest in the assurance that nothing can separate them from Your love. We pray for Your healing touch on their mind, for restful sleep, for steady support from those around them, and for the peace that surpasses all understanding to guard them day and night. We ask this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and access to You, amen.

We encourage you to keep coming to Him honestly, even with short prayers when anxiety is high, and to thank Him for His unchanging love. He is not punishing you for finding joy, He is inviting you to find your deepest joy and rest in Him while also enjoying the good things He allows. Keep seeking Him in His Word daily, and let His promises speak louder than the intrusive thoughts.

We hear how exhausting this is, living on high alert and wanting to enjoy something simple like a show you love, then being hit with the fear that God will punish you or stop hearing you for it. Thank you for naming that so honestly. That tug of war between wanting joy and feeling afraid of it is so heavy to carry alone.

What you describe makes sense with how OCD can work. Intrusive thoughts can feel very loud and very true in the moment, like a warning you have to obey, even when they do not reflect what is actually true about God or about you. The fact that the thought feels urgent does not mean you have done something wrong by enjoying a good gift, and it does not mean God has turned away.

It can help to have someone to walk with you in this specifically. If you already have a counselor, therapist, or pastor you trust, we encourage you to bring these exact fears to them this week so you are not sorting through them by yourself. If you do not have that support, please consider reaching out to a trusted professional alongside prayer. You do not have to figure out the whole pattern at once.

Father, we lift our friend to You right now. You see the anxiety and the intrusive thoughts and how tired they are. Please bring calm, steady reassurance of Your nearness and Your care, and give wisdom and support for the next steps. Help them to rest in Your kindness and to find help that truly helps. In Jesus' name, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honest confession has been heard and taken to the Lord with care, and there is much tenderness in the way you have described this heavy burden of anxiety and intrusive thoughts.

Know first that the thoughts of God toward you are not as your troubled thoughts suggest. The Psalmist cries, How precious also are Your thoughts unto me, O God, how great is the sum of them. They are not few or fleeting, but so numerous that they cannot be counted, more than the sand upon the seashore. They are not harsh or hasty, but constant, kind, wise, tender and gracious. And more than this, the Lord declares, I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. His thoughts are practical, for with Him to will is to do, and His acts spring from those thoughts of peace.

This is where the comfort lies for a mind on high alert. Your thoughts in this season say that if you receive a little joy, even in simple things like watching a program that refreshes you, God will punish you or close His ear to your prayers. But God's thoughts are not your thoughts, and His ways are far above your ways. Your thoughts in this affliction are thoughts of fear and punishment, but His thoughts are love, pity and tenderness. The intrusive thought that He is waiting to strike you for enjoying what is lawful and innocent does not come from Him. He is tender of your comfort, and He does not withdraw His presence because you have sought a moment of rest or gladness. When you awake as one who has felt asleep and lost the consciousness of His presence, meditation upon His precious thoughts helps to restore that sense of nearness again.

Anxiety itself, as you have felt, unfits us to meet the difficulty and clouds our view of Him. Do not believe the lie that your prayers are unheard when joy enters your day. The Lord does not measure His listening by such a rule. He hears for the sake of Jesus Christ His Son, whose blood cleanses from all sin, and who is the ground of our acceptance. Nothing can separate those who trust in Him from that love, and no intrusive accusation can lay a charge against those whom God has justified.

Bring these thoughts then to Christ as they come. When the fear says God will punish you, answer it with what God has said of His own thoughts, that they are peace toward you. Learn to say, This fear is my thought, but God's thought toward me is peace. Hold fast to His Word, for His Word is His thoughts spoken, and let it be your daily bread. Pray plainly and briefly when anxiety rises, Lord, help my unbelief, let me think as You think. And do not walk this path alone. Open this struggle to a trusted pastor or mature believer who can pray with you and help you test these thoughts against Scripture, and if the distress remains severe, seek wise and godly counsel for your mind as you would for your body, for the Lord often helps through such means.

Let us pray for you now.

O Lord our God, You know the thoughts You think toward this dear soul, thoughts of peace and not of evil. Look with compassion upon this burden of fear and these intrusive thoughts that accuse and weary. Grant quietness of mind and a steady heart. Help to discern between the voice of fear and Your own tender voice. Teach that Your ear is not closed to those who come through Jesus Christ, and that You do not punish Your children for receiving thankfully what You give for their refreshment. Restore the consciousness of Your presence, and let Your precious thoughts be precious again. Give peace that guards heart and mind, and faith to walk with You in agreement, trusting Your goodness. In the name of Jesus our only hope, Amen.
