Republicans do not have a winning strategy by trying to use question that Reagan used during Carter - Reagan debate. Two major things have changed. The electorate have a different mind set. I should say three major things have changed.
One, the media is different. Even though they were largely Democratic, they were first journalist who wanted to report the story first & best. When they saw blood in the water they came after an individual like hungry sharks no matter what party you were a part of. They were not liberal propagandist.
I heard that question drummed every day on local evening news. It was front page in the papers for days. People were being asked on the streets by reporters what they thought. They did not try to defend Carter. So the masses who do not pay close attention were blitzed so they had a reaction to it.
This will not happen for Romney.
Second, maybe more important, is government assistance. It is an eye opener being in homeless shelters. To see people spend the same way people who are working & living in the 'hood' act. They are buying new shoes, jewelry, eating fast food until the money runs out. They have the best phones & pay, most $50/month. Some pay more to watch tv on their phone. Banks visited Chapman Partnership to help everyone get an account & credit card that has some 'income'. Income meaning one or more checks from the government.
The strain on people that was so evident during the 70's, not felt by many. The food stamp card is keeping many stores open & hiring. The disability checks & SS have fast food places adding extra staff at the beginning of the month. Three bedroom apartments are being rented by single people with disability/SS checks, they often sublet.
This might seem like a good thing but only if it temporary. You see, this is what you would call a false economy. This is creating yet another bubble that will burst. Government money for these programs should be coming from a strong economy but they are borrowing, printing & raising taxes. They are looking for new cash cows as they silently push through another bill to tax & govern the internet.
The result is the electorate is like the proverbial frog in the pot of water heating up slowly. Sudden destruction will come whiles people are hearing peace, peace. There is no such thing as a stagnant economy. Either it is getting worse or better. Truth it is getting worse because this borrowing & spending is not sustainable.
Many people are not desperate for work as in the Carter years. You could see people crying every day just about because they could not meet their needs. The government assistance was not enough. As proverbs says a mans' hungry stomach drives him to work. That may sound cruel but it is true.
The lack of poverty is hurting Romney. Most people I talk to in these shelters & on bus stops are not tuned into his message. They know things need to get better but there is no rush. They think they can keep getting their checks now & it's later for a better economy.
The Republicans are not getting through to the MTV, reality tv, Jerry Springer generation. The new blitz needs to be, it's the economy NOW, stupid, that needs to get better or those checks will be gone sooner rather than later. I've heard so many people say they are not looking for nor do they want a job anymore, their check is enough.
Electing Romney to fix the economy is not really a necessity even to those who think he can do it. His message is boring to most. He is somewhat like the Marcia Clarke telling the spending a lot of time with chemistry & biology charts on DNA during the Simpson trial with a jury who could care less. Unless there is a huge economic scare just before the elections. I think he will lose.
Oh, the third reason is this is the MTV, reality show junkie, drug addict generation. In the 70's drugs were frowned on by my classmates in school. It was not rapped about on the radio every day & shown on Family Guy. People were ashamed for the most part to do things in front of others that this generation posts on youtube. Morality is laughed at & God is openly despised. It is the christian principles of working to support a family that is dying. In this decade that is all about entertainment & drugs, responsibility is a burden.
