Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing so honestly about what you are carrying right now. Feeling misunderstood by everyone, wondering if you are the one not understanding, feeling snappy and frustrated, dealing with irritation in your eyes from allergies, and feeling loaded down from always helping others while falling behind on your own responsibilities is a heavy combination. It makes sense that you feel overwhelmed.
The Bible describes that overwhelmed condition of the heart. When King David was driven from his home, pursued by enemies and even opposed by his own son whom he loved, he prayed, when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. That is Psalm 61. The point of that prayer is not just to describe the problem but to turn the focus to God. You cannot truly pray without focusing on Him, and that focus itself begins to lift you from defeat toward hope. When your spirit feels overwhelmed within you, as David also describes in Psalm 142 and 143, the best thing you can do is to lay out before the Lord exactly what is troubling you, just as you have done here. He already knows your path, even when you feel confused and unsure.
Part of what you describe is that sense of frustration and emptiness that comes when life feels out of balance. There is a kind of frustration that is really a sense that life must be more than just getting through tasks and trying to please people. When we live only on the physical and practical level, trying to meet every need and keep everyone happy, we end up empty and irritable. That cycle can go from feeling inferior or misunderstood, to trying to escape, to feeling guilty for being snappy, and then back to frustration again. Jesus breaks that cycle. He not only forgives and takes away the haunting sense of guilt through the gospel, He fills the spiritual void inside that nothing else can fill.
It is also important to recognize that feelings of heaviness, agitation, discouragement and being easily irritated are not always just about allergies or being tired. Scripture shows that there is spiritual conflict around us, and those feelings can be part of that battle. It is easy to think I just woke up in a cranky mood and excuse it, without seeing that we may be under spiritual pressure. Instead of just bowing down under it and complaining about how horrible things feel, bring it to the Lord in prayer and ask Him for His protection and perspective over you, your home and your mind.
You also mentioned being loaded down by always helping others to the point you are behind in your own things. A caring heart is a gift from God, but burnout comes quickly when we take on more than God has actually asked us to carry. Jesus said His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and that He delights to do the will of the Father. That is the model. It is right to help, but it is also right to seek the Lord about what is truly His assignment for you in this season, and to set loving limits so you can be faithful with what He has given you to do. Your feelings will shift from day to day, and they are not the foundation of your standing with God. Your faith rests on what God has said in His Word, which does not change, even when feelings do.
I am praying for you in Jesus name. I pray that God will lead you to Himself as the rock higher than you when your heart is overwhelmed, that He will bring relief and healing for your eyes and strength for your body, that He will give you clarity where you feel misunderstood and grace in your interactions where you feel snappy, and that He will show you how to help others in a way that honors Him without leaving your own necessary work undone. May He quiet the frustration, remove any guilt, and fill you with His peace as you keep your focus on Him.
