Not baptised yet

I have been a Christian for 3 years & have been at my church for just over a year now & I am still not baptized. I was not grown up in a Christian household, so I wasn't even Christened. I feel conviction or the same sort of feeling I felt just before I started going to church, I feel the tug to get baptized, but I'm scared. What I mean by this is, as someone who is short & doesn't like going under water, more so in a massive pool, I can't bear the thought of the losing control over my legs sorta thing if that makes sense.

I've prayed about it to God & cried out to Him about the fact that I'm genuinely scared to experience that. Of course, I wanna get baptized, but not in a massive pool, I wanna get baptized in somewhere where I can be sat down & be dunked in. Thst feels safer for me & I've been seen it happen online on some of the videos I've watched. I don't like this feeling of being scared of something that is supposed to be sacred & a declaration of my faith.

Maybe you could pray for an opportunity to come up where I could get baptized, but not in a massive pool, somewhere I can sit down & get dunked.

Maybe I feel the more tug to get baptized as my church is gonna do baptisms, but its a massive pool & I can't bear the thought of experiencing that in that pool.

Also, I don't have anything to wear or at least not that I know off that would be appropriate as swim wear & modest. So that's something else stopping me from being baptized.

I don't know how God is gonna do it, but I trust that however it happens, I will get baptized, ideally not in a big pool, but somewhere I can sit & get dunked. So I pray that the opportunity for that comes in His timing.

Thank you to anyone who replies or prays for me. God bless you

We hear your heart, dear brother or sister in Christ, and we rejoice that the Holy Spirit is moving within you, drawing you toward baptism, a sacred act of obedience and public declaration of your faith in Jesus Christ. Your honesty about your fears and concerns is a testament to your desire to honor God, even when it feels difficult. We want to encourage you with the truth that baptism is not about the method or the setting, but about the heart behind it, your identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4).

Your fear of losing control or discomfort with water is understandable, but we must remind you that baptism is an act of surrender. It symbolizes dying to your old self and rising anew in Christ. The very thing that feels frightening, letting go, is the essence of what baptism represents. The Lord knows your heart and your struggles, and He will meet you in your obedience. We urge you to bring this fear before Him in prayer, asking for peace and courage. The Bible tells us, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7). Trust that He will equip you for this step of faith.

As for the logistics, we encourage you to speak openly with your pastor or church leaders about your concerns. Many churches are willing to accommodate baptism in ways that honor both the biblical command and the individual’s needs. Whether it’s a smaller body of water, a baptismal font where you can sit, or another setting, God can provide a way that aligns with His will and your peace. The early church baptized in rivers, pools, and even household settings (Acts 8:36-38, Acts 16:33), so the method is secondary to the meaning.

Regarding modesty, this is a valid concern, and we praise God for your desire to honor Him in this way. Many churches provide baptismal robes or modest clothing for this purpose. Again, we encourage you to ask your church leaders for guidance, they will likely have solutions you haven’t considered.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts for our brother/sister in Christ, who longs to obey You in baptism. Lord, we ask that You would calm their fears and replace them with Your peace. Give them courage to take this step of faith, knowing that You are with them. We pray for wisdom and provision, guide their church leaders to offer a baptismal setting that honors You and brings comfort to their heart. Provide modest attire if needed, and let this act be a powerful declaration of their faith in Jesus Christ. May they feel Your presence and love in a tangible way as they follow You in obedience. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

We also want to gently remind you that baptism is not a requirement for salvation, your faith in Jesus Christ alone is what saves you (Ephesians 2:8-9). However, baptism is a beautiful and important step of obedience for every believer, as Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:19). Do not let fear or logistical concerns keep you from experiencing the joy of this sacred moment. God is faithful, and He will make a way.

Continue to seek Him in prayer, and trust that He will lead you into this next step of your faith journey. We are confident that when the time is right, you will look back on this moment and see how God was working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). May He bless you abundantly as you walk in obedience to Him.

That tug you’re feeling is real, and it’s beautiful, a genuine desire to publicly declare the faith that’s already growing in you. It makes sense that the thought of a large pool feels overwhelming when you picture losing control of your legs. Fear of water doesn’t diminish your commitment; it just means your heart needs a setting that works with, not against, your body’s honest limits.

We’re praying for exactly the opportunity you described: a smaller, calmer space where you can sit and be gently lowered, feeling secure the whole time. Many churches do use portable baptismal tanks or even a bathtub-sized setup for exactly this reason. Our next practical thought is to speak with your pastor or church leader directly. Let them know what you’ve shared here, not just the fear, but your deep desire to be baptized. Churches often have alternate arrangements or can baptize someone before or after the main service in a simpler way. They may also have a robe or gown you can wear over your own clothing, which handles the modesty concern without needing special swimwear. A kind leader would want to walk with you through this, not push you into a scenario that would make you dread the moment.

Your trust in God’s timing is right, and He meets us where we are. Courage doesn’t mean eliminating fear, it means moving forward even while you’re trembling. And you’re already doing that by seeking Him and opening up about it.

Please pray with us: Lord Jesus, thank You for kindling this holy longing in our friend. You know the fear that feels so big, and You see the faith that’s even bigger. Open a clear, peaceful path to baptism, a place that feels safe, a leader who listens, and a small, quiet pool where they can sit and be washed in Your name without panic. Provide whatever clothing is needed, and surround them with people who will cheer them on with warmth. Let the day come when they rise from the water full of joy, not anxiety, knowing they are publicly Yours. In Your faithful name, amen.

It is no small thing when the Spirit of God stirs a soul to obedience, and your longing to confess Christ in baptism is a token of His gracious work. That inward tug is not to be trifled with; it is the Lord’s own call, and to delay when He commands is to rob yourself of peace. The jailor of Philippi, when he believed, did not wait for daylight or convenience, in the same hour of the night he was baptized, he and all his. True faith hastens to obey. This ordinance is not a trifle, nor may we set ourselves up as masters in Christ’s house to alter or postpone what He has appointed. Baptism is the outward expression of inward faith, a visible word that declares, “I am buried with Him and risen with Him.” It is your confession before men and angels, and it is linked with the blessing of God.

I hear your fear, and I would not dismiss it unkindly. The water seems deep, your footing unsure, and the thought of losing control troubles you. Yet consider: baptism is a burial, and a burial requires that we go under the water; but it is also a resurrection, for we are lifted up again. The very act that frightens you is a picture of dying to self and rising to new life in Christ. Your safety is not in the shallowness of the pool but in the everlasting arms beneath you. The Lord says, “Fear not, thou worm Jacob; I will help thee.” Will you doubt Him? He who has kept you until now will not let you slip in the moment of obedience. The hen gathers her chicks under her wings; how much more will your Saviour shelter you when you trust Him in this sacred act? Do not let a timorous imagination magnify the danger. The fear of man or of water brings a snare, but the fear of God brings blessing.

Now, as to the manner: you desire a place where you may sit and be dipped, not a great pool. I see in this no rebellion, only weakness pleading for help. The essential thing is the immersion of the body in water in the name of the Triune God, not the dimensions of the baptistery. If a quieter, shallower place can be found where you may safely sit and be submerged, and if your pastor and church deem it fitting, I see no scriptural hindrance. The one required baptism was in a prison house; another in a desert pool. What matters is the faith that obeys, not the vessel that holds the water. Speak with the elders of your church plainly. Tell them your heart is willing but your flesh is weak. It may be they can accommodate your need, or it may be that God will give you grace to overcome the fear and go down into that larger pool with a holy courage that glorifies Him. Either way, trust Him to make a way. He has promised to help, and His foreknowledge has already appointed the moment and the means.

You mention also the want of modest attire. This too is a common hindrance, but no insurmountable one. The Lord’s poor have ways of providing what is needful. Perhaps a sister in Christ has a garment to lend; perhaps simple, loose clothing can be found that would serve with all decency. The household of faith will not let such a small thing block the path of a willing disciple. Bring this need before your church, and before the Lord. He who clothes the lilies will not leave His child without a covering.

Do not let fear silence your witness or delay your obedience. Baptism is not a show of strength but a confession of dependence. Come as you are, trembling, if you must, and say as you pass through the water, “Lord, I am weak, but Thou art mighty; I die to self, I live to Thee.” It is Christ’s baptism, His death and resurrection, that avails for your salvation. Your own dipping adds nothing to His finished work but testifies that you are His. So, rise up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. May the God who raised up Jesus from the dead give you the spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind, and may that holy ordinance become to you a well-spring of comfort all your days.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Do not let fear of a little water hold you back from so great a gift! For what is the use of the water? It is not merely water, but a tomb and a womb. When you go down, even for a moment, it is a burial of the old man; when you rise, it is the new creature coming forth. You dread the sensation of losing control for a breath? Consider what you gain: the pledges of the covenant, the forgiveness of sins, the indwelling of the Spirit. Is it not easy for God to bury your sins as easily as your head dips? Is it not easy for Him to raise you up? And yet you cling to the fear of a pool’s depth as though the water were a monster and not a servant of grace.

You say you would rather sit and be dipped, that this feels safer. I understand the flesh shrinks from what it does not control. But tell me, where is the faith that trusts the Maker of all bodies? Our Lord did not choose His cross; He submitted to the death that was appointed. The manner matters little if the heart is obedient. The church sets before you a way; do not despise it because it humbles your pride of control. Is the water too deep? Yet the same hand that holds the sea in its hollow holds you. If you can trust Christ for your soul’s salvation, can you not trust Him to keep your legs from failing in a few feet of water?

And you speak of lacking modest clothing. This too is a small hindrance, not a wall. The adornment that pleases God is the hidden person of the heart, the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. A simple, dark garment that covers with decency is sufficient. Does not the church have sisters who can lend or advise? Ask, and let this not be a pretext for delay. Do not think that because you lack fine swimwear, the grace is diminished. The harlot adorns herself to allure; the bride of Christ arrays herself in modesty and shamefacedness. Even a plain tunic, when worn for so holy a purpose, becomes glorious.

You have felt the tug, as you rightly call it, the conviction that drove you to the church in the beginning. That is the voice of the Bridegroom calling you to the public confession. Do not silence it with anxious reasonings. The time is now; the wrath to come is real, and the baptism is the flight to safety. John preached a baptism of repentance to make the Christ manifest; now Christ’s own baptism unites you to His death and resurrection. Will you shrink back because the water is not the shape you wished? The Israelites passed through the Red Sea, with walls of water on either side, and did not choose the path. They walked by faith, and you are called to do the same.

I will pray that God gives you courage and removes every obstacle, but I charge you: do not wait for a perfectly comfortable arrangement. Go to those who oversee the baptisms in your church. Tell them your fear; perhaps they will guide you gently into the water, or allow you to sit on the steps and be immersed from there. Yet even if you must stand under their hands, remember it is an act of a moment. The dying is quick; the rising is eternal. The flame of fear is quenched in the ocean of God’s love.

Put to death this timidity, and let the burial be complete. Rise dripping, not with shame, but with power, a newborn heir of the kingdom. I pray an opportunity swiftly comes, but more, I pray you seize it with boldness when it does.

Your fear is real, and I do not think it is a small thing. You are being drawn by the Lord to take this step of obedience, and that pulling you feel is from Him. The very fact that you sense that conviction, that strong desire to be baptized despite your fear, shows the Spirit’s work in your heart. Please do not let the enemy twist this into something that makes you feel ashamed. The fear you describe of losing control in a large pool is a human reaction, but the sacredness of baptism has nothing to do with the size of the pool or the depth of the water. It is about declaring that your old life is dead and buried, and that you are now alive in Jesus Christ. The water itself is a picture of death to the old and resurrection to the new. What matters is the reality of your heart before God, not the dimensions of the place where you obey Him.

Faith and fear cannot rule your heart at the same time. When fear fills your mind, faith is pushed aside. And when faith takes hold, fear loses its grip. You have already shown faith by crying out to God honestly about this. Do not stop. Remembering the Lord and His presence is the great cure for fear. The fear of the Lord is a holy awe, a reverence for His majesty and a hatred of evil. That kind of fear is the beginning of all true wisdom. It is not the same thing as a phobia or a feeling of panic. The fear you have of the water is not the reverential fear of God. In fact, that deep desire you have to be baptized is part of that good and right fear of the Lord. He is drawing you to step away from the fear that paralyzes and to step into the faith that obeys.

You have prayed for an opportunity where you can sit and be immersed, somewhere that feels safer to you. That is not an unreasonable request. The command of Jesus is to be baptized, and the book of Acts shows that when people believed, they were baptized, often that very day, in whatever place had enough water. There is nothing in Scripture that requires a massive pool. The obedience is the central thing, the public witness that Jesus is Lord. So you can continue to ask God to open a door for exactly that kind of setting. And you can also talk to your church leaders about what holds you back. Be just as honest with them as you have been here. A loving church will want to help you take this step in a way that does not overwhelm you with physical dread. They may have a solution or a way to accommodate this that you have not thought of.

As for the clothing, let that be one burden you do not carry long. That is a simple provision. You do not need special apparel to be baptized. You only need something modest and practical, and the Lord knows your need before you even ask. This will not be the thing that prevents you. Jesus, who commands you to be baptized, will not let a piece of clothing stand in the way. Your trust that He will do it, in His timing and in His way, is already a work of faith. Do not despise that. Hold on to that confidence. Obedience is not about you mustering up bravery. It is about stepping forward while looking at Him, not at the water. He is with you. And He has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
