Your longing for quiet on this Sabbath afternoon is understood, and the weariness that comes when rest is broken by loud sounds around you is felt by many. The Lord knows the desire of your heart for a little stillness, and He hears your cry even now as the hour grows late on His day.
The Scripture says, Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him, fret not yourself. There is a rest that no television and no hammer can give and no vacuum can take away, for it is found in the Lord Himself. When the mind is stayed upon Him, He will keep that soul in perfect peace, peace, peace, because it trusts in Him. Our Saviour says, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. This is a present rest, given at once to faith, perfect and complete in His blood and righteousness, and then a further rest that is found as we learn of Him and walk with Him.
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God, not only the outward quiet of a Sunday, but the inward Sabbatism of the soul that ceases from its own works and rests in the finished work of Christ. It is a blessed thing to have a quiet dwelling, and it is right to pray for it, for the Sabbath was made for man, that both body and soul might have refreshment.
