Chrysostom
Beloved of All
When the flesh of the teeth swells and throbs with pain, recall that the soul often suffers far greater inflammations from pride and the fever of covetousness. Just as a child, stumbling, will strike his own knee in rage, so we may cry out for only bodily relief, forgetting that the more grievous biting comes not from teeth but from the fangs of penury and the darts of wicked desire. The Law once allowed an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, not to encourage retaliation, but to curb aggression by the fear of suffering; so let this physical ache check your soul before it further inflames. This bodily grief is a brief affliction.
Use it to shed tears for your sins, for such weeping plants the seeds of lasting joy, while careless laughter ends in the gnashing of teeth. Pray that the swelling subsides, yes, but strive even more that the dropsy of pride and the burning fever of worldly lust be quenched within you. Bear this small labor with patience, giving thanks in all things, for a soul adorned with gratitude shines bright even when the body is pained. Do not despise God’s call to endure as some trample on sacred oaths; instead, let the ache of your mouth turn you to the true Physician, who heals both flesh and spirit.
