Your prayer has been heard, and your tears have not been hidden from the Lord who sees in secret. You speak of being alone, of feeling forgotten, of weeping even for your cats, and of a life that has seemed to be one long loneliness. Hear then what the Scripture speaks to such a sorrow.
Our blessed Savior knew this loneliness in its fullest measure. He said, You shall leave me alone and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. Just when as Man He most needed human sympathy, He was left alone. There are coarse minds that scorn fellowship, but the tender heart feels the cut of being forsaken. Yet His loneliness did not destroy Him. It pained Him but it did not dismay Him, for the Father was with Him. And so it is with you. Though you feel that none can like you or love you, though you say I am only alone, the child of God is never utterly alone. If you are in Christ, the Father is with you still, and that presence is shelter enough till the storm passes.
You ask urgently for a new home, a safe place for yourself and for the creatures entrusted to your care. The Lord is the keeper of His people, and His promise is sweet, He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust. It was something more than the protection which a soldier gives to a comrade, it was the protection of a mother for her young. There was love in it, and homeliness, and kindliness. To be under the shadow of the Almighty is to be at home. If we walk aright we shall not venture upon a single day without first seeking Divine protection. How safe we are when embarked in the good ship of Providence, with such a Captain who has foreordained all things from the beginning even unto the end. Each hour is safe, for God has made it so. Each place of difficulty and of danger shall still be secure to the faithful servant of the Lord. Ask Him then for that safe dwelling you seek, and trust Him to provide in His time and by His hand. He that feeds the ravens will not let His children starve. Patiently wait the appointed time, and do good, and so shall you dwell in the land and verily you shall be fed.
You speak of thieves stealing your energy, of those who put you down and make sport of your pain, and of demons who will not quit. Know this, deliverance from the power of darkness is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin. Where we look for justification, there must we also look for sanctification and for keeping. The prisoner is ready to be executed, but there comes to him undeserved deliverance, for the King's own Son has borne the penalty. God has not only invented a way of deliverance, but He has found a ransom. Hear His own word, I have found a ransom. Sinner, do not doubt your deliverance, for God has said it. The blood of Jesus is that ransom. Your deliverance came when the Lamb was slain. It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy. He must bring you forth, and He makes that deliverance effectual. The dogs of hell may rage around the soul, as they raged around Christ in His loneliness, but His brave spirit was not cowed, and neither shall yours be, if you rest in Him. He restores strength to the weary, not by taking back some stolen force from men, but by pouring out His own grace, which is sufficient and which enriches. He brought them forth also with silver and gold, and our deliverance is attended with enrichment, for He gives more than bare rescue.
You say work has been a waste and you were used for your energy only, and that you would forget the past and pack and be ready to move. It is wise to set your house in order and to put away what you do not need, to be ready to go where Providence calls. Yet do not let bitterness take root. Whose character is safe in these days when slander is rife. Be content and bear it, and leave vengeance with the Lord. If you had no troubles you would have less to declare of His goodness. But the believer after affliction can say, The Lord has chastened me sorely, but He has not given me over unto death. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Let that be your song. Deborah sang of deliverance from enemies, but we have a greater salvation to sing of, deliverance from worse enemies by a greater Savior. Let your gratitude be deeper and your song more jubilant.
Let us pray for you now.
O Lord our God, who has promised that Thou wilt not leave us nor forsake us, look upon this weary one who feels alone and forgotten. Thou knowest the tears shed in secret, the longing for a safe home, the care for these small creatures Thou hast made. Provide, we beseech Thee, a dwelling place of safety and peace, in Thy good time and by Thy good hand. Spread Thy wings over this life and let there be rest under Thy shadow. Deliver from the pit by the ransom Thou hast found, even the blood of Thy dear Son shed for sinners. Restore strength, lift despondency, and let not the honor of deliverance be taken by any other, for it is of Free Grace only. Teach this soul to wait patiently, to trust implicitly in Thy guidance, to forgive those who have caused pain, and to live to declare Thy works. Keep from all evil, and bring at last to that home which is eternal, where no tears shall fall again. For Jesus sake, Amen.
