We join you in this longing for quiet and for the presence of God, and we understand how distracting loud voices and cellphones on a train can be when your heart wants to be still before Him.
We hear your desire to hear God, and Scripture reminds us that He often speaks not in the noise and clamor but in stillness. Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10. We are also reminded of how Elijah encountered the Lord, not in the wind, not in the earthquake, not in the fire, but after the fire, the sound of a still small voice. 1 Kings 19:12. My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him. Psalm 62:1. That quiet seeking is precious to Him, and He honors a heart that wants to listen.
We also want to gently encourage you that while outward quiet is a blessing, true stillness begins in the heart. Even in a noisy train, we can turn our hearts inward to Him, to pray without ceasing and to guard a quiet place for Him within us. At the same time we pray that those around you would show consideration and that you would be granted moments of peace to seek Him.
We noticed your prayer closed with Amen but did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is through Jesus alone that we have access to the Father and can truly hear from Him. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. It is because of His sacrifice and resurrection that we can approach God with confidence and know that He hears us.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, thanking You that You desire to speak to Your children and that You are near to all who call upon You in truth. We ask that You grant our dear one a quiet heart and quiet surroundings, that even on a noisy train You would calm the distractions and let Your still small voice be heard. Give peace to this journey, move upon those nearby to speak softly and with respect for others, and give our friend grace to be patient and gentle even when there is noise. Help us all to learn to be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. James 1:19. Draw this heart deeper into Your Word and into prayer, and let the assurance of Your presence be greater than any outward disturbance. We ask this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

If you ride regularly, you might try sitting in a quiet car if your train offers one, or using simple earplugs to soften the background noise. Some find it helpful to set aside even two or three minutes before boarding or after arriving to be still and bring what is on your heart to the Lord, so the train ride does not have to carry all the pressure of that listening time.

Your longing to be still that you may hear God is a holy and wise desire, and I thank God to see it in you. There are times when solitude is better than society and silence is wiser than speech, and the Scripture commends it to us, Let him sit alone. When the soul would hear the Lord, it does well to seek to get alone and to be quiet and thoughtful in its solitude, not merely to be alone, but to sit as one in the posture of thought, that it may commune with its God.
The voice of the Lord is powerful and full of majesty. It shakes the wilderness and it also whispers in mercy to the humble heart. Yet we must remember that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. The mere letter alone will not profit unless we put our ear down to the promises of Scripture till we hear God speaking through them to our soul. Hearing begets meditation, and meditation is as the landing net which brings the fish to shore. What we hear in the Word we are to inwardly digest, to ruminate upon as the clean creature chews the cud, till the Truth becomes our own.
I pray for you that the Lord will grant you outward quiet where you travel and a greater inward quiet within. May He restrain needless noise about you on the train and give you a calm spirit, and may He open your ear to hear Him indeed. Take your Bible with you in that quietness, study your case as in the sight of God, and study His thoughts concerning it in Christ. When you have heard, take a few minutes in a quiet room afterwards and pray for a blessing upon what you have heard, that it may not be a careless or forgetful hearing, but an attentive and earnest hearing by which the Spirit works life.
May the Lord make your solitude fruitful, may you hear His reproving and His comforting voice, and may you hear Him above all other voices, for this is His beloved Son in whom He is well pleased, hear Him. May He give you hearing, for spiritual life is only from God, and may that hearing lead you to trust the sinners Saviour, whose blood cleanses from all sin.

Your prayer for quiet so that you may hear God is itself a sign of a listening heart, and I thank God for that desire in you.
Scripture tells us that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God, and that the Church is wedded to her Bridegroom by His voice and teaching. John the Baptist said he stood and heard the Bridegroom's voice and rejoiced greatly because of it. His joy was to stand, to listen, and to hear that voice. So your longing to have noise set aside that you might hear Him is right and according to God.
We learn also that Christ taught not only when He opened His mouth, but even in His silence He gave instruction. There are times when God speaks with a loud voice like a herald after a great silence, calling and gathering His people, and there are times when His presence is known in solitude and great quietness, as on the mountain where there was a pure light and a cloud and the disciples fell down in awe. In both, a quiet and ordered stillness helps the soul to attend.
Much confusion comes when many voices strain against each other and no one can mind what is said. When all is clamor, we cannot learn what is useful. Quietness, lowliness and meekness in bearing and in tone of voice prepare the heart to receive what God would say. This is true in the church and it is true also on a train or in any crowded place.
I join you in prayer. I ask the Lord to grant you inner stillness even when the world around you is noisy, to guard your heart from distraction, and to let you hear the voice of Christ clearly through His word. I pray also that those around you would act with consideration and kindness, speaking softly and respecting the quiet of others, so that all may travel in peace. May the Lord who speaks both in word and in silence draw near to you, teach you, and give you joy in hearing Him.
