We hear your cry and we join with you in seeking the Lord together in Jesus name concerning this heavy burden of a gossiping neighbor, idleness, financial pressure, hospitalization and the fear of ruin and disgrace that has felt close to the grave.

We understand your distress over a neighbor who is idle and unemployed and who instead of working with their own hands spends time spying, meddling, and spreading gossip with disrespectful pictures and discord. The Word of God speaks clearly about this. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, Leviticus 19:16. A perverse man stirs up strife, and a whisperer separates close friends, Proverbs 16:28. For lack of wood a fire goes out, without gossip, a quarrel dies down, Proverbs 26:20. And we are warned not to be like those who are busybodies, not working at all, but being busybodies, 2 Thessalonians 3:11, and to make it our aim to lead a quiet life, to mind our own business, and to work with our own hands, 1 Thessalonians 4:11. The Lord also calls us to labor honestly, Let him who stole steal no more, but rather let him labor, producing with his hands something that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need, Ephesians 4:28. Idleness that turns to spying and destroying another's reputation is not from God, for God hates one who sows discord among brothers, Proverbs 6:19.

Vengeance belongs to the Lord, Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but give place to God's wrath, for it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord, Romans 12:19. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places, Ephesians 6:12, so we do not wrestle with the neighbor in hatred but we stand against the spirit of gossip, slothfulness, sorcery, jealousy and confusion in the name of Jesus.

We command that spirit of confusion, delay, disorder and mockery to leave and to have no place in this home or neighborhood, Submit therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you, James 4:7. Lord, we ask You to close the mouth of the gossip and to bring conviction and repentance to this neighbor, that they would turn from idleness and find honest work and purpose in You, and that they would learn to mind their own affairs. We ask You to protect Your child from ruin and from the war of words, to heal from all suffering and to keep them far from the grave, for we claim Your promise that we shall not die but live and declare the works of the Lord, Psalm 118:17. Provide for every financial need according to Your riches in glory in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:19, and remove the burden of extra invoices and bills that gossip has caused. Give peace that surpasses all understanding to guard heart and mind in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:7. Teach us to set godly boundaries, to not return evil for evil but to overcome evil with good, Romans 12:21, to walk in love and to forgive as You have forgiven us. Let no more reputation be destroyed by lies, and let truth and quiet diligence prevail. We place this entire situation into Your hands, trusting You as our defender and provider, not ourselves. We encourage you to remain steadfast in prayer, to not engage in repaying gossip with gossip, to guard your heart and your household with wisdom, to continue in honest work as God provides, and to seek fellowship with faithful believers who will support you. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who is our peace and our protector, and trust that He will bring justice in His time and restore what has been meant for harm.

We are not meant to fix or control what our neighbors do, and we hear you naming that too when you say we are not God and not responsible for their choices. That is a healthy and true distinction. One way we have found helpful to think about this is that boundaries are like a property line. They help us know what is ours to own and care for, our own time, energy, choices and peace, and what belongs to someone else.

When gossip and meddling press in, a practical step can be to quietly strengthen that line. That might look like choosing not to watch or check what the neighbor is doing, stepping away from conversations that spread information, practicing a simple no when you need to protect your time, and leaning on one or two trusted people like a pastor or mature friend to help you stay grounded rather than carrying this alone.

Your cry has been heard and the weight of these trials is not hidden from the Lord. The confusion, the slander of tongues, the watching and whispering of neighbors, the pressure of want and sickness and the fear that ruin and even the grave itself draws near, these are heavy burdens indeed, and you do well to bring them before God who alone can deliver.

It is well to have grace enough to see that tribulation comes from God, for He fills the bitter cup as well as the sweet goblet. Troubles do not spring out of the dust, neither does affliction grow up from the ground, but the Lord Himself kindles the fiery furnace and sits as a Refiner at the door. That which we receive from the rod of the Lord bears the blessed aspect of chastening from a Father's hand, and this makes even the sharpest smart to be profitable. This truth may wisely moderate our anger against second causes. Our afflictions may come distinctly from man, as the result of malice and gossip and meddling, and yet they may come with even greater certainty from the Lord and may be the necessary outcome of His special love to us. You are not God, and you are not required to bear the office of God in defending or avenging yourself. Vengeance belongs to Him, and deliverance belongs to Him also.

For there is a word of grace concerning those who feel themselves going down to the pit, Then He is gracious unto him, and says, Deliver him from going down to the Pit, I have found a ransom. Job 33:24. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance of a sinner from the pit through a ransom if God had not thought of it. He has not only invented a way of deliverance, but He has found a ransom, and it is a gift of Divine Love. The prisoner is ready to be executed, but there comes to him undeserved deliverance from all punishment, for the King's own Son has borne the penalty of all his iniquities. God has given commandment to save you and you shall be saved, saved from yourself and from all the attacks of your old sins, saved from the devil, saved from evil company, for God has said it, Deliver him from going down to the Pit. Unless a supernatural power is put forth, any form of deliverance is worth nothing. If you have been born again from below, you will go below, you must be born again from above if you are to go above. There is no true liberty but that of which Christ makes you free.

You have rightly named the works of the flesh, for as it is written, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like, those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. To give way to gossip, to idle laziness that spies upon another man's house, to the distribution of disrespectful pictures and false information, to sorcery and divination and meddling in another's life, to the sowing of discord and the destroying of reputation, these are not small faults, they are of the power of darkness. Deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin. We must look to our heavenly Father, altogether and alone, for sanctification and for rescue from these snares. He has delivered us from the fascinating power of sin, from the power of darkness, and He can do so still.

You speak also of the hellish artillery of unbridled tongues. A human tongue is soft, but it can cut to the very quick, and the wounds from a cruel tongue are not easily healed. Many of the Lord's servants have known this. David could say that he was the song of the drunkard and the harlot's jest, and that Doeg and Shimei and multitudes accused him. Be content and bear the slander for a little while. Remember, the higher the tower the longer will be the shadow, and often the higher a man's character the fouler will be the slander that comes against him. Yet it is written, He shall send from Heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. If all the forces on earth are not sufficient to save His saint, God will send sufficient reserves from the ranks of the heavenly host to preserve His people. He can deliver you from the noise of archers, from ecclesiastical discord and carnal cares and inward doubts and above all from the plague of sin, that you may dwell in peace within your borders.

And who is your neighbor. The word comes from near and to dwell, persons residing or being near us, and if any one in the world is near us, he is our neighbor. We are bound to love even sinners, and not to drive them from the land of hope, but to seek to reclaim even these. Is a man a gossip or a slanderer or given to sorcery, I cannot love his gossiping or his sorcery, or I should be a partaker in it myself, but I am to love his soul and seek his good, and to do him no damage in return. Your religion claims from you that you should love as your Master loved. How can you imitate Him unless you love too, while still hating the evil itself.

Therefore let your mind be stayed upon God, for it is the mind which is the main thing, it will bring you daylight or midnight, peace or war. Have you not found that the very anxiety which arises through your being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3. Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin, the blood of Jesus whispers peace within. This peace is a present possession and may be enjoyed in the ordinary circumstances of life, even with sorrows surging round, even with loved ones far away, even when persecuted and slandered. Bear your sorrow with Him and then see what peace you will enjoy.

O Lord, gracious God, who has found a ransom and who commands deliverance from the pit, have mercy upon this afflicted one. Keep back his soul from the pit and his life from perishing. Chasten sore as Thou seest needful, but not unto death, and grant that he may say with Thy servant, I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Deliver him from going down to the pit, deliver him from the power of darkness, deliver him from the noise of archers and the reproach of cruel tongues. Forgive all sin through the blood of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who alone is the way of salvation, and create a clean heart within. Rebuke the spirit of gossip and sloth and malice and envy and sorcery, and bring to repentance those who practice such things, that they may turn from darkness to light. Give to this tried soul perfect peace by a mind stayed on Thee, and wisdom to walk uprightly, to love neighbor without partaking in evil, to be still and know that Thou art God. Provide for daily bread, heal the sick, comfort the anxious, and order all things according to Thy fatherly goodness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
