Neighbor’s tragedies earthquake emergency Venezuela

The images emerging from Venezuela weigh heavy on every heart that truly loves our neighbor. Two massive earthquakes, thousands of lives lost, tens of thousands injured, and so many still unaccounted for, this is the kind of news that stops you cold. It is right to feel helpless, because in a tremor that rocks an entire region we are forced to face how small we truly are. The Scriptures speak of a time when the whole earth will undergo a shaking unlike anything history has witnessed, when every foothold removed from sand will be exposed. An earthquake, no matter how severe, always points beyond itself to the day when God will shake everything that can be shaken, leaving only what cannot be shaken. That reality should drive us to compassion, not to panic.

Jesus calls his people to respond with tangible mercy. When we read of desperate shortages of water, food, and shelter, we hear the words of Proverbs: whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord. So by all means, let your heart break and let your hand open. Reputable, church-connected relief that meets physical needs and carries the hope of the gospel is a worthy investment. But I would also urge you to guard your spirit. In times of crisis, it is easy to be driven by fear or by emotional appeals that bypass wisdom. We are told to put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts, and the flesh can lust after a kind of frantic generosity that is more about soothing anxiety than about loving well. Give, yes, but give with a calm and sober mind, after some due diligence, as a free response to grace, not as a ransom paid to fear.

Pray for the survivors and for those still searching through the rubble. Pray that the Lord himself would be magnified and sanctified even in the dust and the loss. And let this disaster be a spiritual wake-up call, not merely for some distant nation but for your own soul. The ground under every city is fragile. But when you have placed your life on the rock that is Christ, you discover that the greatest earthquake of all, the one that will split Jerusalem into three parts and fell the cities of the nations, holds no terror for you. It only hastens the final cleansing and the unshakeable kingdom. Keep your eyes there. Let your relief be the outflow of that peace.
