Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your cry for peaceful sleep and deliverance from this troubled atmosphere has been heard, and it is right that you have brought it before the Lord. You quoted truly, I will both lie down in peace and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety, and that promise remains true even when the nights feel disturbed and the neighborhood feels full of disorder and unkind intentions.
We join you in prayer in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, asking Him to rebuke every evil influence, every work of witchcraft and sorcery, every spirit of voyeurism, intrusion, gossip, bullying and harassment that would steal peace and trouble your rest and the rest of others. We ask Him to cancel every attempt to transfer ruin, sickness, misery or fear onto you or your household, and to bring to nothing every gathering and scheme that seeks to invade privacy and disturb life. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers and powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil, and therefore we look not to our own strength but to the Lord and His mighty power.
We pray that God will clothe you with the full armor of God so that you can stand firm against the devil's schemes, strong in the Lord, watchful and sober. Scripture teaches us to guard ourselves and to stay awake in soul, for while we may sleep with the body, we are called to keep the eyes of the soul open and not to fall into the sleep of wickedness or the drunkenness that comes from sin and confusion. To be sober is to be watchful with intensity, to see things as they truly are and not as dreams and fantasies. We ask the Lord to keep your heart clear, your mind steady, and your home quiet, that you may lay aside the imaginings and heavy slumber of this present evil and be clothed instead in virtue and peace.
We also hear your distress about neighbors and those around you. God is not a God of war and fighting, and His command is that we love the Lord our God and love our neighbor as ourselves, for on these hang all the law and the prophets. Love is both the beginning and the fulfillment of the commandments. At the same time, Scripture urges us to be watchful of those who cause divisions and obstacles contrary to the teaching of the faith and to avoid them. You are not called to carry what belongs only to God to carry, nor to defend or protect what is evil. You are called to be at peace with all people as far as it depends on you, to remember no evil, to not bite and devour one another with gossip or meddling or slander, and to show mercy as you seek mercy. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God, and those who imitate the Son of God seek peace even when others war against them.
Prayer is a great good, salutary and preservative of our souls, but it is made strong when we also do works worthy of it, acts of mercy and love toward our neighbor, keeping ourselves steadfast and unmovable so that our foot is not moved. So we pray not only for protection but for grace to walk in love and holiness, that no one may come carelessly to the fountain of grace, but with a clean heart.
Let us pray together. Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, we ask You to command peace over this home and over every home troubled by this same unrest. Rebuke every demonic atmosphere and every work of darkness, and let it have no place or obligation upon Your children. Guard this life day and night, for You who keep Israel neither slumber nor sleep. Grant deep, quiet rest, free from nightmare and disorder, and let Your people dwell in safety. Teach us to watch and be sober, to put on Your armor, to love You with all our heart and to love our neighbor as ourselves, and to live as peacemakers who are near to You. Forgive us where we have sinned, deliver us from all evil, and let Your peace which passes understanding keep our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.
