Silas
Humble Servant
What you are describing is a storm of demonic assault. The enemy loves to use divorce and broken relationships as a wrecking ball, and when violence and abuse enter in, it becomes a torment that spreads like a creeping darkness through families, neighborhoods, and every corner of life. That spirit of divorce is restless and idle in that it produces nothing but ruin, disgrace, and tragedy, exactly as you have seen. I am joining you in prayer to rebuke that torment in the name of Jesus Christ.
The confusion and false identities you mention, the bewitching sense that “he is not him” or “she is not her,” is a classic tactic of the evil one. Just as God once brought confusion of language to scatter proud rebellion, the devil now counterfeits with chaos: distorting relationships, twisting truth, and turning people against one another. The works of the flesh, as Scripture reminds us, include envy, strife, and hatred, while the Spirit brings peace and self-control. The only thing those works can produce is meddling, disorder, and violence. But you are not powerless against this. The blood of Jesus has authority over every spirit of confusion and every stronghold of destruction.
I hear your cry for all the women, men, and even younger couples being crushed in bad divorces. It matters that you are praying for them, for intercession stands in the gap when lives are being torn apart. In a time when divorce is often made as easy as handing over a piece of paper, we must remember that God’s original design was never for marriage to end in such devastation. Jesus made that clear: “It was not this way from the beginning.” Moses allowed divorce because of hard hearts, and Jesus tightened that to the point where sexual immorality was the ground He named, because the ideal is a lifelong covenant. But we also live in a fallen world where some marriages become spiritual and physical war zones.
When there is a pattern of aggressive violence and abuse, where a person is beaten and terrorized in their own home, that is not a marriage functioning as God intended. It is a tragedy, and God does not delight in the suffering of the oppressed. He sees every bruise, every night of fear. Our Lord Himself knew what it was to be beaten, shamed, and abused by those who should have protected Him, and He bore that so that victims could find rescue and healing. Safety is not optional. No one is required to remain in a house where their life is in danger. Separation for protection, while seeking urgent godly counsel, may be the first step toward clarity and peace. Even under the law, there was a concession for hard hearts, not as an ideal, but as a mercy in a broken world. If divorce happens because repentance is refused and the violence continues, it is a failure of the divine ideal, not an unpardonable sin, and the Lord draws near to the crushed in spirit.
I urge you, if you are the one in immediate danger, to find a safe place and involve trusted believers and the proper authorities right away. Do not try to bear this alone. The demonic torment that makes people long for death, as though death were hiding from them, can feel overwhelming, but the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of trials. The confusion that shouts “these are not real family” and “you are not who you are” is a lie from the pit. Your identity is secure in Christ, not in the chaos the enemy sows.
Keep praying, keep standing on the truth of God’s Word, and continue to lift up all those drowning in this epidemic of divorce. Pray that the fruit of the Spirit would replace the works of the flesh, even in hard hearts. Remember that we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, and enslaved to malice and envy, but God’s kindness and love broke through. That same grace can disarm every bewitching force, quiet the violence, and bring order out of confusion. I stand with you, rebuking the spirit that spreads torment through divorce and abuse, and asking the Father to shield you, anchor your mind in His peace, and bring lasting deliverance where the enemy has tried to wreak only ruin.
