Galatians 5:21-22 outlines the contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. We join with you in prayer against the torment, meddling, sabotage and confusion you are experiencing in your neighborhood and we agree that the spirit of divorce is destructive and contagious when it is allowed to spread from house to house.

We hear your burden for how divorce is tearing at friendships, families, businesses, marriages and courtships, and you are right to see it as more than a legal matter but a spiritual one. The Scripture teaches that marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and that what God has joined together, let no man separate in Matthew 19:6. You quoted Matthew 19:8-9 well where Jesus said Moses permitted divorce because of hardness of heart, but it was not this way from the beginning, and that whoever divorces except for sexual immorality and marries another commits adultery. God hates divorce because of the violence and brokenness it brings as Malachi 2:16 reveals, and yet in His mercy He also provides forgiveness and healing when repentance is sought. For those who are married, the Lord commands that they not be quickly parted, but if separation has happened, they should remain unmarried or be reconciled as 1 Corinthians 7:10-11 teaches.

We also rebuke the meddling, gossip, idle busybodyness and false imitation you described where people intrude into another house and create confusion by saying he is not him or she is not her and claiming false family ties. This is not of God, for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace in 1 Corinthians 14:33, and where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed in James 3:16. We are warned not to suffer as a meddler or busybody in the matters of others in 1 Peter 4:15 and to make it our ambition to lead a quiet life and to work with our own hands in 1 Thessalonians 4:11, and that some walk disorderly as busybodies, not working at all in 2 Thessalonians 3:11. We rebuke that idle and unoccupied demonic influence that seeks only to ruin and disgrace and to increase tragedy, for our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities and spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places in Ephesians 6:12, and we stand against it in the name of Jesus Christ.

We also want to address lovingly what you mentioned about girlfriends and boyfriends going through bad divorce. In biblical terms there is no casual boyfriend or girlfriend relationship that includes sexual intimacy, for that is fornication outside of marriage. Courtship should be a purposeful season between a Christian man and a Christian woman with the goal of discerning marriage to a godly spouse, keeping the marriage bed undefiled as Hebrews 13:4 teaches, and fleeing sexual immorality as 1 Corinthians 6:18 commands. For those who have been wounded by divorce, whether as spouses or as those in courtship affected by the breakup of families around them, God can heal and lead them toward holy marriage rather than repeating the pattern of hardness of heart. We pray that any relationship you are involved in or praying for would be centered on purity, commitment and faith in Christ.

You rightly brought up Galatians 5:21-22 and Titus 3:3, and we cling to the contrast there. The works of the flesh include envy, drunkenness, carousing and things like these, of which those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God in Galatians 5:21, but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control in Galatians 5:22-23. Titus 3:3 reminds us that we also once were foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another, but Titus 3:4-5 shows that when the kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to His mercy. There is hope for transformation for you, your neighbors and those trapped in this cycle.

We pray together now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved in Acts 4:12 and through Him alone we have access to Your throne. We ask You to rebuke every demon of divorce, meddling, sabotage, abuse, bewitching confusion and violence that has tormented this neighborhood and this life. Lord, place a hedge of protection around this house and let no weapon formed against it prosper. Bring conviction where there is hardness of heart and heal where there is wounding from divorce. We pray for every man and woman and every young person in courtship who has been hurt by divorce, that You would bring comfort, chastity, wisdom and godly spouses who will honor You in lifelong marriage between a man and a woman. Let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard hearts and minds in Christ Jesus in Philippians 4:7, and help us all to live peaceably with all men as far as it depends on us in Romans 12:18. Turn idle hands to honest work and meddling tongues to prayer and encouragement, and let Your Spirit bring order out of confusion. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

We hear how worn down you feel living so close to this kind of strife. When a neighbor's marriage is coming apart with anger and accusations, the tension can feel like it spills over onto the whole street, and it makes sense you would feel unsettled and want peace to return.

Divorce brings deep grief and change, not only for the couple but for families, friends and others nearby who see the fallout. It is understandable you are noticing how much hurt and confusion it leaves behind. You do not have to carry or sort out every detail of what is happening in another household to still care and pray for everyone involved.

One steady step that often helps in a season like this is to gently limit how much of the conflict you take in. It is okay to step away from conversations that try to draw you into taking sides or repeating details, and to keep your attention on guarding peace in your own home. If the weight of it stays heavy, it can help to talk it through with a pastor or another mature believer you trust, just to have a calm, grounded voice alongside you as you seek wisdom for boundaries.

Father, we bring this neighborhood before You and ask for Your quiet and protection over each home. Guard our friend's heart from confusion and fear, give wisdom to know when to step back and when to speak, and bring healing where there is hurt. Your cry concerning this turmoil in the neighborhood and in the homes round about you has been heard, and it is right that you should bring it before the Lord, for He alone can deliver from the pit and from the power of darkness.

The Lord Jesus has taught us plainly what you have quoted, that Moses permitted divorce because of hardness of heart, but from the beginning it was not so. Marriage is the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, ordained of God, and it is not to be broken lightly. Where hearts are hard, where there is sexual immorality, aggression, imprudence, meddling in another house, and abuse, there we see the works of the flesh made manifest, envy and malice and confusion, of which Scripture warns that they bring ruin and disgrace. The fruit of the Spirit is otherwise, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, and where Christ reigns, He teaches us the mischief that comes from loving sin and He delivers us from its fascinating power.

You speak of sabotage and torment and a contagion of divorce among friends and family and business, and of idle spirits that find occupation in sowing confusion, so that it is said, he is not him and she is not her, and false ties are made to bewilder the soul. This is indeed the power of darkness, and deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin. We cannot break these bands by our own power. Just as the man whose thirst followed his drinking and whose drinking followed his thirst was brought to a delirium from which he could not escape, so souls entangled in strife and lust and meddling cannot free themselves. But there came a voice from the excellent Glory, Deliver him from going down to the pit, and Infinite Mercy snapped the bands and set him free. That voice you shall hear if you are a child of God, when you are brought into peril and trouble, for God has given commandment to save you.

Therefore let us pray that the Lord will rebuke this confusion and violence that would vex your life, and preserve your going out and your coming in, and answer your morning prayer, Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the Evil One. May He withdraw men from their evil purpose and hide pride from them, and open the ears of those who now walk in foolishness, disobedience and deceit, enslaved by passions and pleasures, living in malice and envy.

We do not ask the Lord to bless what He has called sin, nor to affirm any union outside His holy ordinance, for there is salvation in no other name but Jesus Christ, and purity and uprightness belong within the covenant He has ordained. We ask instead that He will bring repentance where there has been hardness of heart, healing where there has been wounding, and restraint where there has been aggression and meddling. We pray for every woman and man, every girlfriend and boyfriend now wounded by bad divorce and by relationships that have not honored God, that they would look unto Him and be saved, for it is all you have to do, to look out of yourself and away from yourself, and look to Christ. He sent His Word and healed them and delivered them from their destructions.

May the Lord chasten where chastening is needed, and yet not give you over unto death, but cause you to live and to declare the works of the Lord. When the worst has come to the worst, He lays bare His arm and brings deliverance for His people. Be communicative of His goodness, and openly say, I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. May He grant you to be screened from this noise of archers, to enjoy liberty in Christ, and to go forth, having been delivered, to help tear others from the power of the destroyer.

We commit your house, your neighbor's house, and all the families and friends of whom you have written, to the pardoning and healing hand of God, that from a pardoning God you may receive such mercies that your spirits revive. Amen.
