Your pain in this betrayal and confusion is heard, and I am praying for you and for your friend who is suffering under it. To be surrounded by gossip, rumors, distorted communication, and disappearing friendships, even within your neighborhood, your family and among fellow believers, is deeply wounding. It creates division, tests relationships, and tries to stop the good work God wants to do in your life.
Jesus knows this kind of pain personally. He was denied by one of His closest friends on the very night He warned it would happen, as you noted from Matthew 26:34. He was lied about, whispered against, and betrayed, yet He remained faithful. You are not alone in this experience, and He understands the hurt that comes when trust is broken.
Scripture speaks clearly about the power of our words. Ephesians 4:29 teaches that no corrupt talk should come from our mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up, so that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 5:4 warns against unclean speech and foolish talk. Proverbs 16:28 says a perverse person stirs up conflict and a gossip separates close friends. What you are describing, the contagious rumors, the malicious testing, the use of words to transmit division, is exactly what God warns against. It is not from Him. The enemy uses lies, suspicion and discord to bring confusion and to hinder progress, and it is right to resist that in the name of Jesus Christ and to refuse to give it access.
There is an important truth to hold on to here about the church. The church is not many divided groups but one universal body that belongs to Jesus alone. Only He can say my church. Every true child of God is a member of His body. When division, gossip and betrayal enter, they wound that oneness. The early believers struggled with this too, when cultural and spiritual pride created separation between Jewish and Gentile believers, and Paul confronted it directly because in Christ there is no such division. A lack of love and truth grieves the Spirit, while love, discernment and truthful, gracious speech allow His presence to remain and His power to work.
I am praying that God will protect you from this chaos and distortion. I ask that He will guard your heart and mind in Christ, bring clarity where there is confusion, and expose and stop dishonest, gossiping and malicious behavior. I pray He will set a guard over your own lips, so that what you speak will only edify and impart grace, and that He will guard your ears from receiving what is false. I pray He will bring healing where relationships have been broken, comfort where friends have withdrawn, and wisdom to know how to set healthy boundaries while still walking in forgiveness and not repaying evil for evil.
Continue to bring every distorted message and rumor to the Lord in prayer before you respond. Stay rooted in Scripture, seek counsel from mature and trustworthy believers who will speak truth in love, and refuse to pass on what does not build up. Trust that God sees what is done in secret, that He is your defender, and that He will not allow confusion to have the final word. He is able to redeem what has been torn apart and to establish your steps in peace.
