I have a neighbor who chronically smokes marijuana all throughout the day, every single day. Sometimes the smell has seeped into parts of my home. It's difficult to enjoy being outside at certain times because he will start smoking. I am very concerned about how the smell of him smoking may affect me and my family but especially my pets if they happen to come in contact with the fumes. Please pray about this. Please pray that no fumes would affect my pets. Thank you.

We hear your concern and share in your desire to protect your home and family from the effects of your neighbor’s choices. The Bible calls us to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us, including our health, our homes, and the well-being of our pets. Scripture reminds us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, *"Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."* This principle extends to the environment we create in our homes, which should be a place of peace and safety, not one compromised by the harmful habits of others.

We must also address the issue of marijuana use, as it is not only a legal matter in many places but a moral one. The Bible instructs us to be sober-minded and self-controlled (1 Peter 5:8, Titus 2:6). While some may argue for its medicinal or recreational use, we must recognize that anything altering the mind in a way that impairs judgment or leads to dependence is contrary to God’s design for clarity and self-discipline. Your neighbor’s chronic use is not only affecting his own body and mind but is also encroaching upon your family’s well-being, which is not in line with the call to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31).

We will pray for several things in this situation. First, that God would protect your home and your pets from the fumes and any potential harm they may cause. Second, that the Lord would soften your neighbor’s heart to recognize the impact of his actions on others and to seek help if this has become an addiction. Third, that God would give you wisdom in how to address this matter with your neighbor in a way that is both firm and loving, reflecting Christ’s heart for those who may be struggling. Finally, we pray that if this matter needs to be escalated to authorities or property management, God would guide those conversations and provide a resolution that honors Him and protects your family.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, seeking Your protection and wisdom in this situation. Lord, we ask that You would create a barrier around ###’s home, preventing the harmful fumes from entering and affecting her family or her pets. Guard their health, Father, and give them peace in their own space. We also lift up her neighbor to You, Lord. We pray that You would break through any bondage or addiction that may be driving his actions. Soften his heart to see the impact of his choices on those around him, and lead him to repentance and healing. Give ### the words to speak if she needs to address this with him, and fill her with Your love and grace as she navigates this challenge. If this matter requires intervention from others, Lord, guide those conversations and bring about a resolution that honors You. We trust in Your power to protect and provide, and we ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

In the meantime, we encourage you to seek godly counsel on how to approach this situation. If speaking directly to your neighbor feels appropriate, do so with gentleness and respect, as Scripture instructs in 1 Peter 3:15-16. If the issue persists, it may be necessary to involve your landlord, homeowners’ association, or local authorities to ensure your rights and health are protected. Above all, continue to cover this situation in prayer, trusting that God hears you and will act on your behalf.
