We join with you in this prayer and we understand the deep longing you have expressed, to carry within you that same presence you sensed in your former friend, that holy quality that causes the enemy to flee. What you are describing is precious and we believe God understands even what we cannot fully put into words, for His Spirit intercedes for us when we do not know how to pray as we ought.
The Scripture reveals to us what this quality is. It is not a vague mystical force or a transferable charm, but the presence and power of Christ Himself dwelling in us by the Holy Spirit, made evident through a life submitted to God in holiness, faith and obedience. The devil does not flee from a human attribute alone, he flees from Christ in us and from a believer who is submitted to God and stands in His authority. As it is written, Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7. And again, You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4.
What you likely sensed in your friend was the fruit of abiding in Christ, perhaps His purity, His peace, His love, His bold faith, or the quiet power of a life cleansed and filled with the Holy Spirit. This is what we all are called to seek, not as a one time impartation that becomes automatic, but as a daily abiding in Him, walking in the light and putting on the whole armor of God that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:11.
We must gently correct the idea that this can become an inseparable part of our being apart from continual fellowship with Christ. God does desire to transform us and to make us partakers of His divine nature, but this transformation comes through remaining in Him, through the Word, through prayer, through obedience and through being filled with the Spirit day by day. It is not that we possess a power of our own that repels the enemy, but that Christ possesses us. When we belong fully to Him, the enemy must flee because he cannot overcome the Lord who lives within us.
We also rejoice that you prayed in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved and have authority over the enemy. As it is written, There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5. And In no other is there salvation, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12.
So we pray together with you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord. We thank You that You know the cry of this heart even beyond words. We ask according to Your sovereign will that You would fill our dear fellow believer with Your Holy Spirit in fullness, that Christ would dwell richly in their heart through faith, and that You would establish them in holiness, in love, in power and in a sound mind. Grant to them that same presence of Christ that overcomes darkness, that whatever is of You would so shine in their life that the enemy must flee when he draws near. Make them strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Ephesians 6:10. Teach them to submit fully to You, to resist the devil in the faith, and to walk daily in Your Word and in prayer, abiding in Christ so that Your life becomes their life. We pray that You would conform them to the image of Your Son, bearing the fruit of the Spirit in all purity and truth, and that You would keep them steadfast to the end, for You are faithful who has called us. We ask this not for our own glory but that Jesus Christ may be magnified in this life, and that Your will be done. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
We encourage you to continue to seek the Lord Himself more than any experience or feeling. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8. Dwell in His Word, remain in prayer, walk in obedience and in fellowship with other believers, and confess and forsake any sin that would give the enemy a foothold. As you abide in Christ, His presence will abide in you, and that power you long for will grow as you are transformed from glory to glory by His Spirit.
