We hear your cry and we join with you in seeking the Lord for this, for we understand your desire to have that holy presence within you that causes darkness to flee. What you sensed in your former friend is not a mysterious force beyond Scripture, but it is something the Word of God does reveal to us very clearly. It is the presence of Christ Himself dwelling in a life that is submitted to God and filled with the Holy Spirit.
Scripture tells us the principle you are longing for in James 4:7, Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. The devil does not flee because of a quality we possess in ourselves, but because of the One who possesses us when we are surrendered to Him. Again we read in 1 John 4:4, You are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world. That greater One is the Holy Spirit, and when He reigns in us through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the enemy cannot remain.
We also think of how we are transformed not by seeking an experience alone, but by abiding in Christ. As it is written in 2 Corinthians 3:18, But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit. And in John 15:4, Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can't bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. What you are asking for, to have this become a permanent and inseparable part of your being, is the very work God promises to do as we walk with Him daily, putting on the whole armor of God that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, Ephesians 6:11, and bearing the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control, Galatians 5:22-23.
We do not seek a nameless power, we seek the Person of Jesus, and as we draw near to Him, He draws near to us and establishes His holiness and authority in our lives.
We pray together with you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to You. We thank You that You have heard this prayer and that You know the deep longing that words cannot fully express. Lord, we ask according to Your sovereign will that You would fill this life with Yourself. Grant the very presence of Your Holy Spirit in fullness, that Christ would dwell richly within. Make this one to be rooted and grounded in You, established in holiness, in faith, in purity and in love, so that whenever the enemy draws near he must flee because You are there. We ask that You would make this not a fleeting visitation but a permanent dwelling, an inseparable part of this being through abiding in Jesus day by day. Cleanse, sanctify and strengthen, and clothe with the whole armor of God, that there may be boldness to resist the devil in the authority of Jesus. Transform from glory to glory into the image of Your Son by Your Spirit. We ask this in the mighty and holy name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
We encourage you to continue to pursue not just the effect, but the Cause Himself. Draw near to God through His Word, through earnest prayer, through obedience and through fellowship with faithful believers. Confess and forsake any sin that would give the enemy a foothold, and walk in the light. As you remain in Christ, His presence will remain in you, and that authority which you sensed in another will become your own portion in Him, for He is no respecter of persons and He gives the same Spirit to all who ask and submit to Him.
