Disciple of Prayer
I am scheduled to have a colonoscopy in about 10 days. I am ### years old, and I understand that these procedures can carry greater risks for older adults. At the same time, I have some concerning bowel symptoms along with a positive family history, so my physician believes it is important for me to undergo both a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. I know that God’s Word has greater authority than any doctor’s report, and I believe that God is my healer and that Jesus has provided healing for me, regardless of what the problem may be. At the same time, I am seeking the Lord diligently for wisdom, guidance, and direction regarding what step I should take, whether to proceed with the procedures or simply trust Him to care for every health issue concerning my body. Please pray that I hear God’s direction clearly, because I do not want to be presumptuous in any decision I make regarding faith and medical care. Thank you.

We stand with you in this time of seeking the Lord’s perfect will for your health and decision. The tension you feel between trusting God as your Healer and following medical advice is one many believers wrestle with, and we honor your desire to hear His voice clearly above all else. Scripture tells us, *"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths"* (Proverbs 3:5-6 WEB). This is not a matter of choosing between faith and wisdom, but of seeking God’s wisdom to align both in His perfect plan.

First, we rebuke any spirit of fear that may be attempting to cloud your judgment. The Bible assures us, *"For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control"* (2 Timothy 1:7 WEB). Your concern is valid, but fear is not from the Lord. Instead, we pray that you would walk in the peace of Christ, knowing that He holds your life in His hands. Whether you proceed with the procedures or wait on Him for healing, your trust must remain in Him alone.

We also want to address the authority of God’s Word in your life. You are right to declare that Jesus is your Healer, for *"by his wounds we are healed"* (Isaiah 53:5 WEB). However, we must also remember that God often works through means—including the wisdom of physicians, the discernment of medical professionals, and the natural processes He has ordained. The apostle Luke, a physician himself, was used by God to care for Paul’s physical needs (Colossians 4:14). This does not diminish God’s power but rather shows His sovereignty in using human instruments for His glory.

That said, we must also guard against presumption on either side. To refuse medical care out of a misplaced sense of "faith" can be just as dangerous as relying solely on doctors without seeking the Lord. James 4:17 warns, *"To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin"* (WEB). If your physician has recommended these procedures based on concerning symptoms and family history, it is wise to consider their counsel while praying for God’s guidance. At the same time, if the Lord is leading you to wait or seek alternative paths, you must obey Him without hesitation.

We pray now for you, lifting this decision before the throne of grace:

*"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the Great Physician and the Author of our faith. We thank You for Your promise to guide us when we lack wisdom, for You have said that if any of us lacks wisdom, we should ask of You, who gives generously to all without reproach (James 1:5). Lord, we ask that You would pour out Your wisdom upon our dear brother/sister in this moment. Remove any confusion, fear, or doubt, and replace it with Your perfect peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Father, we declare that You are the God who heals, and we stand on the truth that by the stripes of Jesus, healing has been provided (1 Peter 2:24). Whether You choose to heal miraculously or through the hands of physicians, we trust in Your sovereignty. Give our brother/sister the clarity to hear Your voice above all others. If You are leading them to proceed with these procedures, grant them courage and faith to move forward, knowing You are with them. If You are calling them to wait, give them the strength to stand firm in that decision, trusting You completely.

Lord, we also pray for protection over their body. If there is any hidden danger or disease, we ask that You would reveal it and bring healing. Guard their heart, mind, and spirit as they prepare for this time. Surround them with godly counsel and confirm Your will through Your Word, prayer, and the peace of Your Spirit.

Above all, Father, we ask that Your will be done in this situation. May Your name be glorified, and may our brother/sister grow in faith and dependence on You through this process. We ask all these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen."*

In addition to prayer, we encourage you to seek godly counsel from mature believers who can pray with you and help you discern the Lord’s leading. Proverbs 15:22 reminds us, *"Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established"* (WEB). Share your concerns with your pastor, a trusted Christian friend, or a medical professional who shares your faith. Sometimes, the Lord speaks through the wisdom of others to confirm His will.

We also urge you to spend time in God’s Word, asking Him to highlight specific scriptures that speak to your situation. The Holy Spirit is our Teacher and Guide, and He will lead you into all truth (John 16:13). Meditate on passages that speak of God’s healing, His sovereignty, and His promises to guide His children. Write down any impressions or scriptures that stand out to you, and weigh them against the full counsel of God’s Word.

Finally, remember that whatever decision you make, your faith must remain in Christ alone. If you proceed with the procedures, do so with the confidence that God is in control. If you choose to wait, do so with the assurance that He is your Healer. Either way, you are not making this decision alone—you are walking hand in hand with the One who loves you and gave Himself for you.

We stand with you in faith, believing that the Lord will make His will clear and that He will be glorified in your life through this process. May He grant you His peace and direction as you seek Him with all your heart.
