My ### Won't Quit Smoking in Our Non Smoking Building

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I have a neighbor who chain smokes in our ### Owned Apartment Building for Elderly Seniors and Disabled. One neighbor on the other side of this woman is in the hospital due to her smoking as he has bad lungs and can afford to move. I live on the other side and I do not smoke. I quit many years ago. The neighbor is a "###" and in this building that means you have special rights because the management doesn't want one of her special interest groups to come against this apartment. She smokes non stop and even though we complain about one person WAS EVICTED for complaining and others including myself were written up for asking her to stop smoking inside the building. She said it's just too much on her to have to go outside to smoke and she pays rent too. I am sitting here in a smoke filled bedroom as she puffs away next door. I am so mad. I know I should not get mad as a Christian but I am at my wits end.

We understand your frustration and the deep injustice you are experiencing in this situation. It is heartbreaking to see someone’s selfishness and disregard for others causing harm, especially to those who are vulnerable. The anger you feel is natural, but as believers, we are called to respond in a way that honors God—even in the face of unfairness. Let us first address the spiritual and practical aspects of this trial, for we know that God is just and sees all that is happening.

The Scripture reminds us in Ephesians 4:26-27, *"Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, and don’t give place to the devil."* Your anger is valid, but we must not allow it to lead us into sin—whether in our actions, words, or bitterness in our hearts. Instead, we are to trust in the Lord’s justice and seek His wisdom in how to respond. Proverbs 15:1 tells us, *"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."* While this neighbor has shown no regard for you or others, we must still act with grace, even as we stand firm in what is right.

It is also clear that this situation involves systemic injustice, where this woman is being enabled in her harmful behavior due to fear of backlash from special interest groups. This is not only unfair but deeply wrong. Romans 13:1-4 reminds us that authorities are instituted by God to uphold justice, and when they fail to do so, it is right to seek resolution through proper channels—persistently and respectfully. You have already taken steps to address this, and we commend you for that. However, we encourage you not to give up. Continue to document the incidents, including dates, times, and the impact on your health and living conditions. If management refuses to act, you may need to escalate this to higher authorities, such as housing regulators or legal advocates for tenant rights. There are often protections for individuals in your situation, especially when health is at risk.

At the same time, we must also examine our own hearts. Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:44, *"But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you."* This does not mean we allow sinful behavior to continue unchecked, but it does mean we release our bitterness to God and trust Him to deal with this woman’s heart. She is enslaved to nicotine, and that is a bondage we can pray she will be freed from. Her hardness of heart is not just affecting you—it is destroying her own life. Let us pray for her salvation and repentance, even as we seek justice.

We also want to address something critical: you mentioned that this is making you angry as a Christian, but we noticed that your request did not invoke the name of Jesus Christ. This is not a small matter. The Bible is clear that there is no other name by which we can approach the Father. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6, *"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me."* And in Acts 4:12, we read, *"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!"* If you have not already, we urge you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. It is only through Him that we have the power to endure trials like this with peace and the assurance that God will bring justice.

Now, let us pray together for you, for this neighbor, and for this unjust situation:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, lifting up our brother/sister who is suffering under the weight of this unjust and harmful situation. Lord, You see the smoke filling their home, the disrespect shown to them, and the health risks they and others are facing. We ask for Your intervention, Lord. Soften the heart of this neighbor who is so enslaved to smoking that she refuses to consider the harm she is causing. Father, convict her of her sin and bring her to repentance. Break the chains of addiction in her life and draw her to Yourself, that she may know Your love and turn from her selfish ways.

Lord, we also pray for strength and wisdom for our brother/sister. Guard their heart from bitterness and fill them with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Give them the endurance to continue seeking justice through the proper channels, and open doors for resolution that seem impossible right now. Protect their health, Lord, and the health of the other neighbor who is suffering. Provide a way for them to breathe clean air and live in peace.

Father, we rebuke the spirit of injustice and partiality that has allowed this situation to continue. Expose the wrongdoing and bring conviction to those in authority who have failed to act righteously. Raise up advocates and allies who will stand with our brother/sister and fight for what is right.

Finally, Lord, we pray that through this trial, Your name will be glorified. May our brother/sister’s response be a testimony of Your grace and trust in You. May this neighbor and all those involved see Your power and turn to You.

We ask all these things in the precious and mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Stand firm in your faith, dear one. Do not let this trial shake your trust in God’s goodness. He sees, He knows, and He will act. Keep praying, keep seeking justice, and keep your heart open to the Lord’s leading. He will make a way where there seems to be no way. If you need further guidance on how to proceed legally or spiritually, do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to support you in prayer and in truth.

🙏 "‘Our Father in Heaven, May Your Name be kept Holy.
Let Your Kingdom come. Let Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory forever. Amen.’" Matt 6:9-13, in Jesus' Name.

We're right there with you, friend. It's frustrating when someone's actions negatively impact others, especially when those in authority seem to turn a blind eye. But remember, even in the face of injustice, we're called to respond with love and patience, just as Jesus did.

Let's continue to pray for this neighbor, that God would soften her heart and open her eyes to the harm she's causing. Let's also pray for wisdom and strength for you, that you might continue to stand up for what's right without losing your peace. And let's not forget to trust in God's justice. He sees all, and He will make things right in His perfect timing.

In the meantime, maybe consider reaching out to this neighbor in love. Share with her the impact her smoking is having on you and others. You don't have to be aggressive, just honest and kind. Sometimes, a gentle, respectful conversation can make a difference.

Keep fighting the good fight, dear one. We're praying for you.

I prayed that God in Jesus' name will answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. Thank You Jesus!!!
