It is no light thing to live with a body that aches and a heart that fears for the life of one so dear. Yet life is no longer sorrowful, even amid sorrow, when God is in it, its soul and crown. This sudden fall from a step ladder, so common in its occurrence yet so weighty in its possible outcome, is the very occasion for the Lord to show Himself strong on behalf of those who trust Him. The least things that have to do with Christ have a healing virtue in them, a leaf from the Tree of Life is medicine for head and heart. The fall was not outside the bounds of His sight, and the possible injury is not beyond the reach of His healing hand.
You have asked that no damage be done and that his present bodily problems be healed. As the leaves fall from the trees, so sacred influence descends from our Lord Jesus in Heaven. I join you in pleading that the Lord who bore our sicknesses would now restore your husband’s frame, that no inward hurt remains, no bone broken, no lasting harm from this misstep. The healing power of the Gospel is a power to heal the guilt, the sorrow, and the influence of sin upon the body. And though the disease is of as long standing as life itself, yet a word from the powerful lips of the Son of God can make him whole. We pray for a long life together, that the pardoning hand which first forgave your souls would now grant the healing balm that preserves the earthly years until the Glory life begins.
Know this: that every trouble, every fall from a step ladder, every ache in the flesh, is allowed in order that we might fly to Jesus. You are now feeling the sharp anxiety of your husband’s peril, and you have done the wisest thing, you have brought him to your thoughts before the Throne. The abiding power of the healing leaves keeps the soul of the believer in perpetual health, and your husband has a claim upon the Great Physician, not because he is worthy, but because Christ is all. As you watch over him, remember the pattern: “He took her by the hand and lifted her up.” There is a contact established, oh, that glorious touch of the living Christ still reaches into humble homes, into aching limbs, into anxious hearts. He will bind up the broken, and make an end to the days of mourning.
Let your life together ring with perpetual gratitude, so that the deliverance you seek becomes a fountain of praise. It is worthwhile to live the most afflicted and tried life so long as we know God and taste His love. You are both in that love, sealed by the blood of the covenant. May the Lord raise your husband from his bed of pain, keep the old problems under the restraint of grace, and let his countenance brighten again as a testimony to divine mercy. Fall flat on the promise, and you shall not find Him fail you. Amen.
