Disciple of Prayer
My son is in a new school and having a difficult time adjusting. He has made a few friends but the teachers and Vice Principal are concerned about his interactions and says he doesn't socialize well. When I ask him about it he says students are mean to him too. I explained this to the school but I really don't know what to do but give it to God. I have him in therapy and I try to create a positive home environment so I don't know what else I can do. I need prayer and guidance.

We lift up your heartfelt concerns for your son before the Lord, knowing that He cares deeply for both of you. It is a blessing that you are seeking God’s wisdom in this situation, for He alone can bring true peace and direction. You are already doing much by providing a positive home environment and seeking professional help, but let us turn to Scripture for further guidance and encouragement.

The Lord reminds us in Proverbs 22:6, *"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."* This is a promise that your faithful efforts in raising him in godliness will bear fruit. However, we also know that children face trials, and social struggles can be particularly painful. Jesus Himself was despised and rejected by men (Isaiah 53:3), so He understands the sting of unkindness. Yet, He responded with love and forgiveness, setting an example for us all.

It is important to teach your son how to respond to meanness with grace while also standing firm in his identity in Christ. Romans 12:17-21 tells us, *"Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, 'Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.' Therefore 'If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head.' Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."*

At the same time, we must also consider whether there are areas where your son may need to grow in his own interactions. Proverbs 15:1 says, *"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."* If there are behaviors or attitudes in your son that may be contributing to the social difficulties, pray for the Holy Spirit to convict and guide him. It is not wrong to lovingly address these things with him, always pointing him back to Christ as his ultimate example.

We also encourage you to continue advocating for your son at school. While it is good that you have shared your concerns, remain persistent in seeking understanding and fairness from the teachers and administration. Pray for wisdom in how to communicate with them, that they may see your son through God’s eyes and not merely through human judgment.

Most importantly, cover your son in prayer daily. Pray that the Lord would surround him with godly friends who will encourage him in faith. Pray that he would develop a deep confidence in Christ, knowing that his worth is found in Him alone, not in the approval of others. Ask the Lord to give him discernment in his interactions and the strength to walk in kindness, even when others are unkind.

Let us pray together for you and your son:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with this precious mother’s heart and her son’s struggles. Lord, You see the pain and confusion he is facing in this new environment. We ask that You would be his shield and his strength. Surround him with Your favor as with a shield (Psalm 5:12) and place godly friends in his path who will uplift him. Give him the wisdom to respond to unkindness with Your love and the courage to stand firm in his identity as Your child.

Lord, we pray for the teachers and school leaders, that You would soften their hearts toward this young man. Give them eyes to see his potential and wisdom to guide him with fairness and compassion. We ask that You would use this season to draw him closer to You, teaching him to rely on Your strength rather than his own.

Father, we also lift up this mother, who is faithfully seeking Your will. Give her wisdom in how to support her son, and let her not grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9). Remind her that You are at work, even when she cannot see it, and that her prayers are powerful and effective (James 5:16).

We rebuke any spirit of fear, rejection, or loneliness that may be trying to take root in this young man’s heart. In the name of Jesus, we declare that he is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and that he is more than a conqueror through Christ (Romans 8:37). Let him walk in the confidence of Your love and the assurance that You have a plan for his life.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

Finally, we encourage you to keep pointing your son to Christ in all things. Remind him that even when others are unkind, Jesus is his constant friend (Proverbs 18:24). Teach him to pray for those who mistreat him (Matthew 5:44) and to trust that God is working all things together for his good (Romans 8:28). Stay steadfast in prayer, and do not lose heart. The Lord is faithful, and He will see you both through this season.

We're right here with you, mama bear, standing in the gap for your little one. It's tough seeing our kids struggle, but remember, God's got him in the palm of His hand. Let's keep lifting him up in prayer, asking for wisdom, courage, and kindness to navigate these social waters.

We can learn from Jesus here. Even when He was mistreated, He responded with love and forgiveness. Let's encourage your son to do the same, teaching him to turn the other cheek and bless those who curse him (Luke 6:27-28). It's not always easy, but it's the Jesus way.

Let's also pray for those around him - the teachers, the vice principal, and his peers. Ask God to soften their hearts, to give them understanding and compassion. Maybe there's a way your son can reach out to others, be a light in the darkness. We can pray for opportunities for him to show kindness and love, even when others might not deserve it.

And hey, let's not forget to pray for you too, mama. You're in this trenches with him, and it's hard work. Ask God for strength, patience, and wisdom. You're doing a great job, and He sees all that you're doing.

Let's keep trusting in God's plan, even when we can't see the whole picture. He's got this, and He's working all things together for your son's good (Romans 8:28). Keep pointing him to Jesus, and let's keep praying. We're in this together, one prayer at a time.
