Your honesty in sharing how frustrated, discouraged and unhappy you feel is heard, and God understands the weight you are carrying. Living day after day with a child who answers back, refuses to help, and chooses her own way is exhausting, and it is natural to feel worn down by the constant battle.
Scripture shows that God knows very well what it is like to deal with a rebellious heart. When He sent Ezekiel to Israel, He described the people as a rebellious nation, stiff hearted and impudent, a people who had turned away from Him for generations. He told the prophet beforehand that they might not listen, and He warned him not to be afraid of their words and not to be dismayed by their looks. The commission was still to go and speak God's words faithfully, whether they would hear or whether they would refuse to hear. That same principle applies in your home. Your calling is to continue to speak the truth in love, to set a godly example and to keep teaching what is right, even when it feels like your daughter is not receiving it. Her response does not determine your faithfulness.
The Bible also explains why rebellion is so blinding. It describes people who have eyes to see but do not see, and ears to hear but do not hear, because rebellion hardens the heart to spiritual truth. When a young heart is set on outward things, on appearance, on expensive things, on celebrities, on holidays, or even on a misdirected passion for animals apart from God's order, it reveals a heart that has not yet been set right with God. What she needs most is not only better behavior but a changed heart that can see and hear what is true. Only God can open blind eyes and soften a hard heart, which is why your prayer for conviction is so important. Ask God not just to correct her actions but to give her a steadfast spirit that wants to follow the straight path rather than the crooked one.
Discouragement itself is one of the strongest tools the enemy uses to pull us away from God's Word and from prayer. When the task looks too large and the rubble seems too great, we grow tired and afraid. The cure for that discouragement is always to lift our eyes off the problem and onto the Lord. Remember the Lord, who is with you and who will give you strength. Remember how David as a young man faced a giant not in his own strength but in the name of the living God, trusting that God was greater than the enemy before him. The battle in your home is not yours to win by pressure or argument alone. It is the Lord's, and He is greater than any frustration you face.
In that same warning to Ezekiel, God said, do not be rebellious like that rebellious house, but open your mouth and eat what I give you. That is a word for you as well. Do not let her rebellion make you rebellious in return through anger, bitterness, or harsh words. Instead feed daily on what God gives you from His Word. Let it fill your heart and mind first, so that what you speak to her comes from a heart nourished by Scripture. The old law showed how seriously God views stubborn rebellion, calling it a grave matter, yet we now live under grace and are called to patient, prayerful correction that seeks restoration, not destruction.
So continue to pray, continue to set clear and loving expectations in the home, and continue to model the good things you want her to learn. Pray that God will convict her, open her eyes to see the emptiness of living for looks and possessions and popularity, and teach her what is truly good. And pray for yourself, that God will guard you from discouragement and renew your strength as you keep your eyes on Him.
Father, I lift this mother and her daughter to You. You see the frustration and the discouragement and the unhappiness in this home. I ask that You would work in this daughter's heart, convict her of disrespect and rebellion, open her eyes to see and her ears to hear Your truth, and turn her from the crooked path to the straight one. Teach her to honor her mother, to be diligent and humble, and to set her heart on what pleases You rather than on outward appearance and empty pursuits. And I ask that You would strengthen this mother, lift discouragement from her, help her to remember that You are with her, and give her wisdom, patience, and grace to speak Your words faithfully and in love. Do this work by Your Spirit, for Your glory. In Jesus name, amen.
