This strange and weird sensation on your phone, this voice control that pops up again and again, do not be so affected by external things as to get into a state of worry, fretfulness, care, anxiety and distress. What good has ever come from such fretting? Anxiety has never comforted anyone, nor has it brought any grist to the mill. Your very concern over this device unfits you to deal with it calmly. Be prudent with your possessions, certainly, but do not let the mere voice of man, for that is all this electronic utterance could ever be, disturb the peace you have in Christ. These things happen, and all things seem to be going amiss with our inventions at times, but that is no reason for a child of God to be thrown into turmoil.
Consider the voice out of the cloud that the disciples heard on the mount of transfiguration, it was a declaration of the Father's love for His Son and a command to hear Him. Yet that voice from the excellent Glory would only dismay and distract if it stood alone; it was the voice of Jesus that cheered and comforted them. This strange voice on your iPhone has no such authority, and if you are letting it distract you, it is because you are listening more to the clamor of the world than to the still small voice of your Lord. God’s voice is majestic, powerful, full of majesty, it shakes the wilderness and divideth the flames of fire. How small and pitiable is every competing sound! The voice that comes unasked and undesired from your device is not the voice of the Good Shepherd; His sheep hear His voice, and He goes before them. Let other sounds be hushed that you may hear Him.
Perhaps God is using even this petty annoyance to turn you to the right hand or to the left, that you might hear a voice behind you saying, "This is the way, walk ye in it." The still small voice succeeds where terrible things and strange disruptions might only confuse. Could it be that your heart has been too attentive to the world's chattering and too forgetful of your Lord, so that He has allowed this thing to press upon you, that you might cry out, "Lord, show me what You would have me to do"? I hear you speaking not of your soul, but of your phone, of correcting what is going on. But what if the Lord has a voice in this matter for your soul? He is too gracious to send any disturbance without a motive. If you hear His voice at once, He need not speak again with a sharper tone. Today, if you will hear His voice, harden not your heart.
Lift your eyes above this momentary fret. The voice of Providence is always speaking, and these small trials remind us that all flesh is grass, and all our gadgets and comforts are as the flower of grass. There is no necessity for you to hear a voice of thunder to arouse you from minor anxieties. Instead, let the voice of the Babe of Bethlehem, the voice of the dying Lamb on Calvary, plead with you to rest in Him. Hear Him, and these strange things will lose their power to disturb you. A device may be fixed or corrected by some technical means, but only the voice of Christ can fix your heart upon an unshakable foundation. May Divine Grace constrain you to listen to that voice, that you may be saved from all your fretting, and find in Jesus a peace which no pop-up or malfunction can ever take away.
