Humble Prayer Partner
He was better today, but then he's had his moments, but the problems today like yesterday is he won't listen if he's too busy biting at something he's not supposed to be, like one of his leads (which he has now broke & we tried to get him to do a walk later on today, but he wasn't having it, whereas yesterday he was more so okay with it than today, because we did it at the front door yesterday, we did that today & it didn't work), or teddy bears that aren't his or a blanket or a football.

He keeps barking today as well, more so than yesterday, & he growled earlier (in his midst of chewing one of his leads). I know there was a lot more noise today as of neighbors outside a lot more today than yesterday, but he just seems worse or something I don't know. Isn't he supposed to improve on the second day?

Seeing the dog like this got both me & my brother upset, but I prayed that I wouldn't cry whilst with my mum & brother. But my brother went out when he got upset.

He even got thingy at me today, like barking at me or sitting behind me (basically pushing me off the sofa in a sense).

My family aren't believers, so it's just me, praying to the Lord in these moments. What do we do? We're tryna get a trainer, but I don't know if she's doing tomorrow, & she said about doing days that my mum can't do as of work, even though my mum said what days she works I'm pretty sure.

Is he more thingy at me today as I was gone for church today? What's he gonna be like when my mum has to go work? He legit follows my mum everywhere or my brother if he's there, sometimes me. But we can't leave him alone it seems. But to be fair, when he was pretty much falling asleep (as he didn't fall asleep last night, is he just tired?) we one by one left the room, closed the living room door, then went into the hallway & kitchen & was quiet, my mum opened the door & closed it to act as if we went, then maybe like a minute or less, she did it again, to say we're back, & one by one went in the living room & he was excited to see us, but he just sat at the door, he didn't bark or anything.

Thank you to anyone who replies or prays for me & my family & our new dog, God bless you

We hear your heart and the challenges you're facing with your new dog, and we want to lift this situation up in prayer, seeking wisdom and patience from the Lord. It’s clear you care deeply for this animal and want what’s best for him and your family. First, let’s address this with Scripture and prayer, trusting that God can bring peace and order even in this season of adjustment.

The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 12:10, "A righteous man respects the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel." This shows that God cares about how we treat and train our animals, and He gives us the responsibility to guide them with love and consistency. Training a dog, especially a new one, requires patience, and it’s not unusual for progress to feel slow or even backward at times. The key is to remain steadfast in your efforts, trusting that God will help you as you seek to do what is right.

We also see in James 1:5, "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to you." You are asking for wisdom, and that is exactly what God promises to provide. We pray that He will give you and your family clarity on how to train and care for your dog, as well as the strength to persevere even when it feels overwhelming.

Let’s pray together now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that seek Your guidance and peace. We lift up this new dog and the challenges that come with training and adjusting to a new home. Lord, we ask for Your wisdom to know how to guide and correct him in a way that reflects Your love and order. Give patience to this family as they work through these moments of frustration and uncertainty. Help them to see progress, even when it feels small, and to trust in Your timing.

Father, we also ask for unity in this family. It’s clear that emotions are running high, and we pray that You would soften hearts and bring understanding among them. Comfort them in moments of stress, and remind them that You are with them in every step of this journey. We ask that the trainer would be able to work with them soon and provide the tools they need to help this dog thrive.

Lord, we also lift up the spiritual dynamics in this home. We pray for this family, that their hearts would be open to You. Draw them closer to You, especially in moments of struggle, and let them see Your hand at work in their lives. May this season of training and adjustment be an opportunity for them to grow in faith and dependence on You.

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to You and the power to overcome every challenge. Amen.

Now, let’s address some of the specific concerns you’ve raised. It’s not uncommon for a dog to have setbacks, especially in a new environment. Dogs thrive on routine and consistency, and it may take time for him to understand what is expected of him. The fact that he followed your family members closely and struggled when left alone suggests he may be experiencing some anxiety or uncertainty. This is something a trainer can help with, and we encourage you to continue pursuing that support.

Regarding his behavior toward you after church, it’s possible he was reacting to the change in routine or even picking up on your emotions. Dogs are incredibly perceptive, and if you were feeling stressed or upset, he may have mirrored that energy. It’s important to remain calm and consistent in your interactions with him, even when he’s not responding the way you’d like.

As for leaving him alone, the exercise you described with gradually leaving and returning is a great start. This helps him learn that you will come back and reduces his anxiety. Keep practicing this, and over time, he should become more comfortable with being alone. However, if his anxiety persists, a trainer can provide additional strategies tailored to his needs.

Lastly, we want to encourage you in your faith journey. It’s not easy being the only believer in your family, but remember that your prayers and example can have a powerful impact. Continue to trust in God’s plan for your family, and don’t underestimate the influence of your faithfulness. In 1 Peter 3:1-2, we read, "In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won over without a word by the behavior of their wives, observing your pure behavior in fear." While this verse is directed toward wives, the principle applies broadly: your actions and attitude can speak volumes to your family.

Keep pressing into the Lord, and trust that He is working even in the midst of these challenges. You are not alone in this, and we are here to support you in prayer and encouragement.

We can hear how draining these first days with your new dog have been, the ups and downs, the chewing and barking, the worry that things seem worse instead of better. It makes so much sense that you and your brother are feeling upset. Bringing a new dog into the house is a big transition for everyone, and dogs pick up on all the unfamiliar sounds, smells, and routines. Sometimes the second day is harder because the newness is wearing off and the dog is still trying to figure out where he fits. So please don’t be hard on yourself or think you must be doing something wrong; what you’re describing is really normal.

You mentioned you’re pursuing a trainer, and that’s a wise move. Having someone who can read the dog’s needs and help your family find a rhythm together will lighten the weight on your shoulders. In the meantime, when you feel like it’s all on you as the one praying, remember that God is with you in the chaos of the living room as much as in the quiet of a church service. Your prayers don’t go unheard, and asking for patience and wisdom in these little, messy moments matters deeply.

Father, thank you that you care about every part of our lives, even the stress of a new pet. Please calm this dog’s restlessness and help him settle into his new home. Give this family patience with one another and with him, and work out the schedule so a trainer can step in soon. Surround this household with your peace, and comfort their hearts when they feel overwhelmed. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The trial of a wayward creature, whether it be a dog that will not heed, or a heart that will not turn, is appointed of the Lord to drive you again to the throne of grace. You see in this animal a will that runs contrary to your own, a restlessness and a noise that disturb your peace; and it grieves you, because you are but one praying soul in a household that knows not the Master. Yet herein is a stage for faith to act. Little faith is true faith, and it is the gift of God. If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you can cry to Him who made both the lion and the lamb, and He will order this small matter according to His wisdom. The dog may not improve on the second day, nor the tenth; but your faith is not in the improvement of the beast, but in the God who hears prayer. Cast this burden upon Him, for He careth for you. When the creature bites the lead and breaks it, when he barks and growls, remember that you also have a nature that snaps against the reins of divine command, and yet the Good Shepherd bears with you. Let your handling of this poor animal be seasoned with patience, for patience is the shield of faith that quenches the fiery darts of frustration. Seek the Lord earnestly about this, and leave the trainer’s schedule and the family’s unbelief in His hands. He who clothes the grass of the field will provide wisdom for your mother and brother, and for you, in due time.

But let me press a deeper word upon your spirit. You are seeking the Lord in this trouble, and that is well. Yet see to it that you seek not only relief from the yelping of a pup, but the face of Christ Himself. Many are seeking Jesus for the loaves and fishes, for temporal comforts; but blessed is the soul that will not be content until it finds her Lord. Your family sees your prayers, and perhaps they mark your tears. This very dog, sent into your home, may be a messenger to break up the fallow ground of their hearts. Do not despise the day of small things. Faith that endures the daily vexations, the little disquietudes of life, brings more glory to God than a faith that merely boasts in the great tempests. When you cannot leave the room lest the creature cry, remember that your Master has promised never to leave you nor forsake you. The dog follows your mother and brother, and so does your heavenly Father pursue them with lovingkindness, though they know it not. You are the lone intercessor in that house; then stand in the gap with the shield of faith. The growling, the barking, the disobedience, these are but momentary afflictions; but the salvation of souls is eternal. Pray not only for a quiet dog, but for a quickened family. And as for your own heart, be not distressed if the animal seems more cross with you after you have been at worship. The enemy of souls would magnify such tiny things to cast you down; but faith sees the unseen. You are not wrestling with flesh and blood, nor with canine whims, but against the rulers of darkness. Lift up the shield, and having done all, stand.

Is the dog worse on the second day? It may be. The path of sanctification, whether in man or beast, is seldom a straight ascent. But what then? Your faith must not rest upon a well-behaved pet, but upon the finished work of Calvary. When you strove to leave the room and he sat still at the door, did you not see a faint picture? Even so, the Lord sometimes hides His face from us, to try our faith; but when the door opens again, we leap for joy at His appearing. Use these daily trials as sacred parables. Your mother could not leave her work without thought; neither can you govern your own life without wisdom from above. Seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things, the trainer, the schedule, the broken leads, shall be added unto you in His time. If you have truly trusted Christ, then you are at home in Him even now, though the household be an upper room full of turmoil. The little faith you have is precious, for it grasps a mighty Christ. Let that faith lie down in peace, knowing that He who watches Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. Commend your weeping brother to Jesus, commit your unsaved mother to the effectual prayer of the righteous, and believe that though you see not, yet believing, you may rejoice with joy unspeakable. The very next moment you feel the dog pressing against you on the sofa, let it remind you that your own heart often crowds against the Master, seeking to push Him from His rightful throne. Then breathe a prayer for both your sanctification and the creature’s calmness. This is not too small a thing to bring to the Mercy Seat, for the Shepherd carries the lambs in His bosom.

With the unequally yoked couple, I have not said anything. I had a tiny gap of a chance to say something, but I didn't. I don't know what to say or even how to say it. It feels like the pressure builds up when thinking about holding someone accountable, especially as I'm a quiet person, not...
