My name is ###. I am ### years old. Hear me.

Your words have reached me and I have heard the depth of your pain. You are not invisible. Though you have no papers and the world says you do not exist, you do exist before God. He created all things through Jesus Christ and He knows you by name. He saw you as a child when you were left alone, He sees you now in your hunger and cold and sickness, and He has not turned His face away.

Men have failed you, and what men have done to you is not what God endorses. People promise and leave and forget, but God is not like people. We live in a time when God relates to us by His grace, not by what we have earned or what documents we hold. His grace is His undeserved kindness toward us, and all that He has done for us He has done through Jesus Christ.

You ask what sin you committed as a little girl to deserve this. The truth is, none of us suffers because God is punishing a child for being a child. Scripture says all have sinned and all need mercy, but your abandonment and sickness are not a payment for something you did when you were small. God has made another way to be right with Him, not by our goodness, but by faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. When a person trusts in Jesus, God counts that faith as righteousness and brings that person into His family as His own child.

There is only one prayer God first longs to hear from anyone who has not yet come to Him in this way, and it is, God be merciful to me, a sinner. That prayer opens the door to relationship. Through Jesus there is one mediator between God and man, and by faith in Him we have boldness and confident access to come to God. You can come to Him as a daughter because Jesus has made the way.

You have prayed and felt the heavens were silent, and you wonder if God hears. He does hear the prayers of His people. At the same time, many prayers seem to bring nothing down, and our first thought is to blame God, but often the need is to look at our own hearts and at what prayer truly is. Prayer is not a way to make God do what we wish. True prayer begins with God and His purposes, and we cooperate with Him to see His will done on this earth. It is not meant to change God to see things our way, but to bring us into agreement with Him. The position of your body when you pray is not what matters most, it is the position of your heart, humble and honest before Him.

Prayer is also more than talking to God. It is listening to Him. He speaks through His Word and makes His promises known to our hearts, and then we pray those promises back to Him. That is why we can persist in prayer when we have His promise, even when we see no answer yet. And when we pray, we need to remember who we are talking to. If we see God as distant or uninterested, we will fall into despair. We need to see Him as He truly is, good and able and willing to help. We often limit what God wants to do for us by our unbelief and by looking at our problems as bigger than He is. We measure by our own ability and by what we can see, but God has resources we know nothing about. When there is no visible way for help to come, we should not despair, because God has ways to provide that we have not even thought of. He took care of others with no visible supply, and He can take care of you.

We are also often intimidated by sickness because men have said some illnesses cannot be cured, and we pray differently for a great sickness than for a small pain. But God is not intimidated. At the same time, we do not always understand His ways in healing. Sometimes He heals, and sometimes His answer is, My grace is sufficient for you, and My strength is made perfect in weakness. That does not mean He has abandoned you. It means He is with you in the weakness and will strengthen you in your inner being by His Spirit.

Do not let your heart say God has forsaken you. Look at Him in a positive light, as the One who desires to become to you whatever your need requires. If you are hungry, He is your provider. If you are sick, He is your healer and your comfort. If you are alone, He is your Father and your family. The fervent prayer that comes from the heart, out of real need and desperation, is powerful and effective when it comes from one who is made righteous by faith.

So I am praying for you now, and I will continue to pray. I pray that God will be merciful to you and bring you into His family through faith in Jesus Christ, that He will give you boldness to come to Him and know you are heard, that He will strengthen you in your inner being by His Spirit, that He will show you His will and help you to trust it, and that He will provide for your daily needs of food, warmth, and medicine from resources only He knows, and give you peace in your heart even in this suffering. I pray that He will place people near you where you are who will not turn away but will help you with care and protection, and that you will hear His voice of comfort as you seek Him.

You are not forgotten. You are not disappearing without being seen. God sees you, and as you call on Him through Jesus, you can know that you are His and that He will not leave you. Keep calling on Him, keep listening for Him in His Word, and keep trusting His grace.
