Your cry has been heard and your sorrow has been laid before the Lord with great tenderness. To be left without mother and father while still a child, to have no name in the records of men, to be hungry and cold and sick and to feel that every hand you trusted has turned away, is a burden few can comprehend. And to pray as a daughter and to feel that heaven is silent, to kneel and hear only the echo of your own voice, is a grief of mind that is harder to bear than pain of body. You ask what sin you committed as a little girl to deserve this, and why you are left to die slowly. Hear the truth in love, you did not bring this orphanhood upon yourself by some hidden childhood sin, and your suffering is not proof that you are forgotten. We are all by nature sinners before a holy God and need a Saviour, but your affliction is not a special punishment for a child's fault. The Lord sees you even when the world says you do not exist.
There is One who knows this cry of forsakenness to its depths. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself cried, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me. He who was without sin was forsaken in darkness that sinners might never be forsaken. Grief of mind and pain of body met upon Him, yet even then His faith did not falter, for He said twice, My God, My God, laying hold upon His Father with a double grip. That cry teaches us that to feel forsaken is not to be forsaken, and that prayer is still our refuge when we think God has withdrawn. If you think God has forsaken you, do not give up prayer, but pray the more earnestly, and do not give up faith in Him, but cry again, My God, My God. The child in the dark is still His child when she cries after her Father.
Unanswered prayer is not unheard prayer. God keeps a file for our prayers and His long dated bills will be punctually honoured. He does not measure time as we do, and delays are not denials. At times He uses the arduous exercise of waiting to strengthen the muscles and sinews of the soul, that we may be made useful and may learn to trust Him more fully. At other times He would have us search our hearts, not to find a cause for orphanhood, but to see our need of His grace and to bring us to His promise. Get hold of His promise in Christ and then offer your prayer, for sincere prayer, though it be feeble and broken and seem to reel to and fro as a man at his wit's end, is always acceptable to Him. He has heard the inward groaning when you had no words left, and He has heard the prayer that was only, God forgive me that I cannot pray. Calling upon God in the day of trouble is itself a truthful recognition that He is real and that He is your hope, and it brings honour to Him both in the asking and in the answer, for He has said, Call upon Me in the day of trouble, I will deliver you.
Hear also what the Lord says to those who fear they are forgotten, I have engraved you upon the palms of My hands. His people were loved by Him long before the world was created, and He has loved too long to forget. Judge not the Lord by outward providences or by feeble sense, but trust Him even when you can see no trace of His goodness. You are not invisible to Him. Though you have no document to prove you are human before men, you are fully known and seen before God, who made you in His image and who sees you cold and hungry and sick and alone in that place.
The one remedy for the sin sick soul is the Word of God applied by the Holy Spirit, and the one hope for the forsaken heart is Jesus Christ alone. He was forsaken that you might be received. He was wounded that you might be healed. Salvation is through Him alone, by His blood and righteousness, not by our tears or our strength. Come to Him as you are, helpless and without plea, and cast yourself upon His mercy. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved. He will not turn away the soul that comes to Him in truth.
We are praying for you now, that the Lord will be your Father and your portion, that He will lift the silence and give you to feel His presence, that He will provide daily bread and medicine and shelter, and that He will raise up faithful hands near you to help you. We pray that He will keep you from disappearing and will sustain your life. Seek, as you are able, the help of a faithful local church and those who can aid you with food and care and with steps toward an identity document, for God often delivers by the hands of His people. You are not mad for feeling as you do, and you are not alone as you think. The Lord who heard Hagar in the wilderness hears you still.
May the Lord show you that you are neither forsaken nor forgotten, and may He give you grace to keep crying to Him until the answer comes in His perfect time and way.
