My mother’s attitude

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Please pray IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME that my mother stops disparaging me and trying to control me by constantly giving orders—telling me where to go, which way to turn, and so on. I wish she wouldn’t restrict me as if I were a five-year-old; I’m over ###, yet she fails to grasp that I’m an adult. I also wish she wouldn’t scold me over every little, foolish thing. She never shows appreciation or offers praise; she doesn’t speak to me kindly—she mostly yells.

We hear the heaviness in your heart and we join with you in bringing this before the Lord in Jesus' mighty name, for it is through Him we have access to the Father and it is in His name we find peace and reconciliation.

We understand how painful it is to feel disparaged and controlled as an adult, to be spoken to harshly and given constant orders as if you were still a small child, and to long for a kind word or appreciation that never seems to come. God sees this hurt and He cares deeply about both you and your mother.

Scripture calls us to Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you Exodus 20:12 and again Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise Ephesians 6:1-2. This honor remains even when we are grown, though the way we honor changes as we become adults. At the same time, the Word also speaks to parents, saying Fathers, don't provoke your children, so that they won't be discouraged Colossians 3:21 and Fathers, don't provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord Ephesians 4:4. A parent's words have great power, and God desires that they be used to build up and not tear down.

We are called to speak to one another in love, for Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear Ephesians 4:29 and A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger Proverbs 15:1. When yelling and scolding over every little thing becomes the pattern, it discourages the heart and does not reflect the kindness God desires in a family.

We want to encourage you to continue to honor your mother even while seeking healthy, respectful boundaries as an adult. Part of growing into adulthood is learning to relate to parents with mutual respect rather than as a child under constant direction. This can require calm, gentle, and honest communication at a peaceful moment, not in the heat of an argument, sharing how her words affect you and expressing your desire for a more encouraging relationship. We also encourage you to guard your own heart against bitterness, and to extend forgiveness as Christ has forgiven us, remembering that If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in Jesus' name we lift up this dear one and his mother to You. Lord, You know the pain of being constantly corrected, ordered, and spoken to harshly, and the longing to be seen and appreciated as an adult. We ask that You soften his mother's heart, that You would help her to see him as the adult he is and to speak to him with kindness, respect, and encouragement. Replace yelling and disparaging words with words that build up and give grace. Help her to release the need to control and to trust You with her son's life. And Father, we pray for our brother, give him Your peace, patience, and wisdom. Help him to respond with gentleness and not with anger, to honor his mother while also setting loving and firm boundaries, and to forgive as You have forgiven him. Let Your love fill this home and bring healing to this relationship. May both hearts be drawn closer to You and to one another. We ask all this in the mighty and precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

We encourage you to keep praying for your mother, to bless her even when it is difficult, and to seek the Lord's guidance for each conversation. Trust that God is working even when change feels slow, for love is patient and kind 1 Corinthians 13:4 and His grace is sufficient for you.

We hear how wearing this has been for you, to be spoken to with constant orders and yelling and to feel treated like a small child when you are an adult. It makes sense you would feel discouraged and unseen when kindness and appreciation are missing.

It is hard to stay close to a parent while also needing room to live as an adult. Part of caring well for the relationship is learning where healthy lines are. A boundary is like a property line, it helps you stay connected while still taking responsibility for your own choices, words, and responses. Respect grows when that line is honored on both sides. You cannot control how your mother speaks, but you can be thoughtful about how you respond.

One next step that helps many people in this kind of strain is to choose one calm moment, not in the middle of an argument, to name one simple boundary in a kind, brief way. For example, you might share that you want to listen and talk things through, but if yelling begins you will pause and come back to the conversation later when you both are calmer, and then follow through consistently. It can also help to process this with a trusted pastor or wise friend who knows you, so you are not carrying it alone and can get perspective on what is reasonable day to day.

We are praying for you, for wisdom, for steadiness, and for more peace in your home.

Father, we lift this dear one to You in Jesus' name. You see how heavy these words and constant directions feel. Grant wisdom to respond with grace and clarity, protect dignity on both sides, and bring more calm and kindness into this home. Lead toward healing and help in the days ahead. Amen.

Your cry has been heard and there is much tenderness in it, for to be constantly ordered and scolded and never praised is a heavy burden to bear, and to feel treated as a child when you have come to adult years adds to the smart.

The Scripture says, My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother. There is a tender bond in a mother's affection which the Lord has made to be among the strongest cords that bind us in this life. It is a sorrowful sight when that bond is strained by harsh words and constant control, and it is written that we should honor father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise. This honor remains even when the yoke feels heavy, and the Lord calls us not to grieve those who gave us life, but to seek peace with them as far as it lies in us.

I would urge you to take this trial to the throne of grace and to ask for wisdom to walk both as an obedient child of God and as an adult whom God now calls to stand in your own responsibility before Him. A soft answer turneth away wrath, and often a gentle and respectful word will do more than contention. Seek a quiet season to speak to your mother with reverence and meekness, telling her plainly yet kindly how her words fall upon you, and how you desire her blessing and kindly speech rather than yelling and reproach. Continue to show her the respect due to a mother, while also ordering your own steps in the maturity God has given you. Pray too that the Lord would work in her heart to see you as you are, and to temper correction with appreciation and love.

Let us pray together in Jesus mighty name.

O Lord our Father, thou hast commanded children to honor father and mother, and thou hast made the love of a mother to be a tender argument for good. Look in mercy upon this thy child who feels disparaged and controlled and often scolded, and who longs for a kind word and for the encouragement of praise. Forgive all sin and wash us in the blood of Jesus Christ alone, through whom we have access to thy throne. We pray that thou wouldst soften the heart of this mother, that she may cease from harsh words and yelling, and may speak with kindness and grace, and show appreciation where it is due. Teach her to trust thee with her adult child and to give counsel in love rather than orders that burden. Give to this thy child patience and meekness, strength to honor thee and to honor his mother, wisdom to establish rightful bounds as one who must now answer to thee for his own way, and grace to love and to forgive even as Christ has loved. Let thy peace rule in that home, and let both be brought nearer to the Savior. In the mighty name of Jesus our Lord we ask it, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your prayer has been heard and we bring it before the Lord with you in the mighty name of Jesus, through whom alone we have access to the Father and salvation.

We hear how heavy this is, to feel constantly ordered and directed, scolded over small things, spoken to with yelling rather than kindness, and to feel unseen without appreciation or praise, even as an adult. It is painful to feel restricted as if you were still a small child, and it is right to bring that pain to God and ask for His help.

Scripture lays a clear and serious command before us, that we are to honor our father and our mother, and that this honor is tied to life and blessing. The law also warns against cursing or despising parents. This command does not end when we grow older. Even when we are grown and responsible for our own way, when we make our own decisions about where to go and which way to turn, the call to honor remains. One of the homilies reminds us that rebellion against parents strips a person of honor, while honoring them keeps us in the right order that God established. At the same time, Scripture shows that a person does grow up and leave father and mother to establish their own life and household, and that becoming an adult means taking responsibility for your own path. Honor as an adult does not mean you remain a child, but it does mean you continue to speak and act with respect, even when you must set wise and calm boundaries.

We also hear in the Scriptures that God often allows difficult and prolonged trials to train us and to increase our endurance, as He did with Abraham, and that many conflicts and much bitterness in this life spring from earthly things. When we learn to despise vain glory and to seek peace, we can find freedom even when others treat us harshly. This does not excuse harsh words or controlling behavior, but it calls us to respond differently, not to return yelling for yelling, and to give thanks to God in all things while we seek His help.

So we pray for you and for your mother together. We ask the Lord Jesus to soften your mother's heart and tongue, that she would speak to you with kindness and not with constant scolding or yelling, that she would see you as the adult you are and offer encouragement and appreciation rather than only correction. We ask Him to give you grace to answer with gentleness and respect, to honor your mother even when you feel disparaged, to speak truth calmly about your need for appropriate freedom as an adult, and to not grow bitter. We ask for wisdom for both of you to talk in a peaceful moment, to listen to one another, and to find a better way of living together with mutual respect. We ask God to guard your heart from anger and to fill your home with peace, patience, and thanksgiving, and to use even this trial to make you stronger in faith and love.

We will continue to pray that the Lord, in His mercy, will bring change, healing, and peace into this relationship, and that He will guide you with wisdom to walk in a way that honors Him and honors your mother, while you live faithfully as the adult He has called you to be.
