Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The affliction is great, and the danger is pressing. But do not let your heart be troubled; rather, let it be stirred up to fervent prayer. The weapon of the Christian is prayer, and it must be wielded with watchfulness, not only by day but in the night watches. Think of that Syrophoenician woman: though the Lord seemed to reject her, she persisted, crying out for mercy, and she obtained her request.
Think of the widow who by her importunity prevailed over the unjust judge. How much more will our merciful God hear those who cry to Him day and night? Yet see to it that you yourself are on the alert. Do not rely on the prayers of others while you remain negligent.
For if we sleep, the help of others will profit us nothing. Wake, then, and pray without ceasing. Approach the throne of grace with loud cries, alleging nothing but mercy. Pour out your soul for your loved one.
And if the answer delays, do not give way to despair. The tree that has received many blows may at last fall by a single stroke; so too, the mercy that seems long in coming may suddenly appear. Only do not cease. For I am fully persuaded that such eager desire, such love, will not fail of its effect.
God is not unjust; He will hear those who call upon Him in truth. Therefore, commit this trial to the Lord, and let your prayer be as the importunate friend at midnight, who would not be denied. May He who raised the dead and rebuked the fever grant healing according to His will.
