What a precious burden you have laid upon our hearts in bringing this dear soul before us, your friend's mother, whose name is unknown to us but perfectly known to our Lord. We shall indeed bear her up in prayer, for the very leaves of the Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations, and the least touch of Christ is full of healing virtue. He is the great Physician, and it is our joy to carry this case into the presence of Him who healed all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with Him.
Your desire is for bodily healing, for wisdom to rest upon the surgeon's hand, and for the family to behold a miracle wrought by the Lord. All this we lift before the throne of grace. Remember that our Lord Jesus is grand in emergencies; when the loaves were few and the multitude hungry, He did but speak and supply abounded. When the woman bowed with infirmity for eighteen long years stood before Him, He spoke the word and laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight and glorified God. No request for healing had passed her lips, yet her misery drew forth His compassion. Even so, your friend's mother is seen by those eyes that are as a flame of fire, and He is able to save to the uttermost.
We ask the Lord to grant the surgeons a share of that wisdom which is from above, for the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. But observe that the power to save from sin and sickness lies not in human skill, nor in the patient's own faith, but wholly in Jesus Himself. He did but speak in the synagogue at Capernaum, and the unclean spirit came out. If He but will it, a word will suffice; the silent going forth of Divine energy can accomplish the cure. So we pray, "Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make her whole."
And oh, that this household might witness that sweet conjunction of healing and forgiveness! When our Lord healed the man sick of the palsy, He first declared, "Thy sins be forgiven thee," and then commanded him to rise and walk. The two blessings flow from the same pierced hand. Let this trial be the way by which they see the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings, and may they find that He who heals the body is also the Saviour of the soul.
We have known the Lord to do swift wonders, and we expect great things from Him still. The miracle of the loaves has not exhausted His power; He has the dew of His youth upon Him. Continue in prayer, and have faith about this simple family matter that is causing so much distress. Commit the cause to God, and believe that He will grant the request according to His good pleasure. The breath of the Spirit can make the bones that are very dry to live. We join our prayers with yours, and we trust that the same Jesus who healed the leper with a touch will look upon this dear woman and command a perfect cure, whether through means or apart from means, so that the family may stand in awe of His mercy and give Him all the glory. Let your heart be comforted: He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. To His name be praise.
