My eyes

You come asking for the light of these bodily eyes to be restored, and that is a grief which cuts deep. But consider well: the sickness of the eyes makes darkness seem more suitable than light, so those who are diseased in eyesight prefer a shaded room. Is it not also true that a soul sick with sin often prefers the darkness of this world to the piercing light of God's truth? The greater marvel is not that the blind see with the flesh, but that the heart, once blind, beholds its Maker. We should seek first that our inner eyes be opened, for we enter heaven not in place but in disposition, and it is possible for one on earth to stand in heaven and have vision of the things there. Bodily sight is lent for a season; it is the eyes of faith that behold eternal things.

Yet the Lord is not indifferent to the body's cry. He who knows the secrets of the heart, who spoke to Joseph the very thoughts of his mind, knows your longing before you utter it. He sometimes permits these afflictions not to cast you down, but to draw you up. When the body is dimmed, the soul may become keen, hearing the words from on high. Still, you must not despair of even bodily healing. How many who heard the word ten times and remained insensible were afterwards converted at one hearing? The tree seems not to fall by many strokes, but those strokes ready it for the final blow that brings it down. So persistence in prayer and a life turned fully toward God may ready the soul, and the body's relief may follow in His time. Keep asking, keep kneeling, but let your prayer stretch beyond mere flesh. Say thus: "Lord, give me the light of my eyes if it be Thy will, but first give me the light of Thy countenance. If Thou dost not restore sight to this body, yet make me to see Thee."

Faith suffices where signs are withheld. The shepherds needed a vision because of their dullness, but the faithful man receives strength without sensible signs. Do not make your faith depend on the miracle of healed sight. There awaits the unrepentant a darkness far more terrible than any bodily blindness, punishments and torments that have no end. Flee from that, and cling to the hope of salvation in Christ alone. Whether you go through this life with clear eyes or in shadow, the true and final vision is Christ Himself. May He grant you health of both body and soul according to His perfect wisdom, and may you one day behold Him with unveiled face in His kingdom.

The request you have brought is close to the heart of God. When we read the Scriptures, we find that the Lord is deeply concerned with our physical bodies. He gave Israel dietary laws and instructions for cleanliness, not as arbitrary rules, but because He cares about our health and well-being. He knows the processes He built into our bodies, and any healing that comes through those processes is still a divine work, because He is the one who designed nature itself.

There is a mystery to healing. I think of the blind man whom Jesus touched, and after the first touch, his sight was only partially restored. He could see people, but they looked like trees walking around. It took a second touch from the Lord for him to see everything clearly. This is the only recorded instance of a gradual miracle, and it reminds us that healing does not always follow a single pattern. Sometimes faith is released instantly, like the woman who touched the hem of His garment and was healed at that moment. Other times, the restoration comes in stages. We cannot put God in a box or pretend we have all the answers for why good people suffer with illness. But we can know that every good gift of healing, however it comes, is from Him.

There is also a real connection between the prosperity of your soul and the health of your body. So much of our physical condition is tied to our inner state. I pray, just as the apostle John wished for his friend, that you would prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers. As we lift your eyes up to the Lord, it is also good to ask Him to shine His light into your heart, to heal any spiritual blindness, and to let your inner man be strengthened. Sometimes, our most pressing need is to see Jesus more clearly, and when that vision becomes bright, it brings life to our whole frame.

Let’s ask the Father together. If there is a physical cause, we pray for the Creator to mend every cell and nerve. If there is a deeper need in your spirit, we ask for the peace of Christ to rule in your heart, washing away stress and restoring what anxiety may have stolen. We look to the One who made the eye and who guides us with His eye. You are the apple of His eye, and He notices every detail of your suffering.

May the Lord grant you a clear, complete, and lasting restoration of your sight, so that you might see not only the faces of those you love but also the beauty of His creation with fresh, new eyes. And beyond the physical, may He open the eyes of your understanding to know the hope to which He has called you.
