The plea for , heavy with child and bowed low with sickness, has reached the courts of heaven, and now stirs our hearts to fervent intercession. It is a holy instinct that makes a mother’s prayer for her suffering daughter her own, crying out, “Lord, help me!” This prayer is so handy, so fitting for every trial, and it rises now for the dear one whose frame is frail and whose spirit faints within her. We take up this case, believing in a God who hears, and we pray against this long weakness that has cast her down, pleading that out of this very weakness she may be made strong. For our Lord Jesus Christ is the Word of God sent for the healing of all our destructions, He who bore our sicknesses has sympathy for her in this affliction.
Let us unite in this petition, that the God of peace would come and bless in the cool stillness of this painful hour with His own salvation. There is a life for a look at the Crucified One, not only for the soul’s eternal malady, but a touch of His garment for the body’s raging storm. In the morning, when her misery rises afresh, and in the evening, when her heart is weary, may He show forth His lovingkindness toward her, granting the daily cleansing and daily strength she needs. Our prayer is importunate: “Will You not revive her again?” This is no small thing, for a lifeless frame and a hopeless mind are a heavy burden, and we agonize together that she might know the reward of such prayer, an abundance of peace and a restoration of her joy. We do not pray for strength to remain in this desponding weakness, but for the mighty deliverance of the Lord, who can break her bands asunder and bring her out of this darkness and the shadow of death.
And as we plead, let us prove the sincerity of our prayer by our practical love, bearing her up with words of comfort and deeds of kindness, for a wet fleece must be wrung out before the Lord. The intercession of Christ Himself preserves her faith, even as He prayed for Peter that his faith would not fail. So we trust her soul is held secure, even while her body is tried. And we look forward to the day when she shall again declare His works with rejoicing, sacrificing the sacrifices of thanksgiving. God grant her that look of faith, and give her the life of strength and hope, even now, for her own sake, for her child’s sake, and for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.
