What a good desire the Lord has put in your heart, to want more time with Him and for that time to be real and deep. That longing itself is evidence of His work in you, because true life is found only in His Son.
Scripture says God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life. That eternal life is not only about how long it lasts, though it does last forever because it is grounded in the promise of God who cannot lie. It is also about the kind of life it is. It is a rich and full quality of life marked by righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Quantity without quality would be empty, but in Jesus we are given both. All that God has for you is wrapped up in Him.
To spend quality time with Jesus is to live out what is already true of you if you are in Him. You have been joined to Him, made one with God through His sacrifice, buried with Him and raised with Him to walk in newness of life. Your old life was crucified with Christ, and your new life is hidden with Christ in God. Christ Himself is your life. That is why time with Him is not just a duty to add to your day, but the place where you learn to live from your true identity.
That kind of time often looks like stepping away from the noise to be alone with Him, one on one, heart to heart. It is seeking the things that are above, where Christ is at the right hand of God, and setting your mind there. It is living as one who has been freed by the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death, reckoning the old nature dead and choosing instead the life governed by the Spirit and lived in fellowship with the Father and the Son.
There are many things that will crowd Him out if we let them. Scripture warns to keep ourselves from idols, from anything that takes the place that belongs only to Jesus. More quality time with Him will mean gently turning away from those distractions and choosing Him again, trusting that when you draw near, He draws near to you.
I pray with you now that the Father will help you in this. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I ask that You draw this dear one into deeper fellowship with You and with Your Son. Give a growing hunger for Your Word and for prayer, and make a way for unhurried, one on one time with Jesus. Teach how to seek what is above and to live from the new life that is hidden with Christ in You. Fill that time with Your peace and joy and righteousness, and let Christ be more and more clearly their life each day. Guard from every idol and distraction that would steal that communion, and let the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord be enjoyed more fully now and forever. Amen.
