Silas
Beloved of All
The hope you have for this evening, for good news and rejoicing with your wife, is exactly the kind of fellowship the Spirit delights to create. What you are really asking for is to know, in a deep and tangible way, that God abides with you. And we have that assurance: we know He abides in us by the Spirit He has given. The Spirit is God’s seal upon your life, His mark of ownership on you both, and the down payment that proves He is completely sincere about your full redemption.
When you break bread together and commune, you are not just two people sharing a meal. Your spirits, made alive in Christ, are meeting God in the realm of the Spirit. That is where the true union happens. The Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are children of God, and He joins your lives together in a deeper fellowship. As you yield to Him, He will not just be a presence alongside you; He will be actively working to perfect the love of God in your hearts. He frees you from the struggle of the flesh, where you know the good you want to do but find yourself doing the opposite. Instead, as you walk in the Spirit, you are enabled to truly love as Jesus loved.
That overflowing, powerful presence is what you are inviting. And it is God’s will for you. Jesus Himself, our example, was full of the Holy Spirit and led by the Spirit. If that was how He lived, you can be confident it is the Father's purpose for your life and your marriage to be filled, led, and controlled by the Spirit. There is no place here for spiritual deadness or a lack of enthusiasm for the things of the Lord. The question put to believers long ago still rings true today: have you received this dynamic, this power, in a way that overflows? You have the indwelling Spirit if you belong to Christ, for no one can call Him Lord except by the Spirit. But there is a continual need, and a command, to be filled with the Spirit.
So tonight, as you seek Him, don't just ask for a general blessing. Actively present yourselves. Yield the control of your evening to Him. Let His Spirit be uppermost, ruling your hearts. When the Spirit takes the lead, He will not draw attention to Himself; He will testify of Jesus. He will open the Scriptures to you and fill your home with the mind of the Spirit, which is life, joy, and peace. Instead of the mind of the flesh, which is death, your thinking will be set on spiritual things, and the fruit of love and rejoicing will be the natural result.
May this very night be a time where you both experience the renewing power of the Holy Spirit in a greater measure. May He manifest His presence, speak to you both, and fill your hearts to overflowing, so that you truly rejoice together in the goodness of your God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
