Beloved of All
Me and my husband live with his family. For most of time here Ive been cooking and cleaning after him and his family. Rarely we would get something to eat and if we did I would get the cheapest item on the menu. Now I started working and no longer cook and clean as much. I make half of what he makes but now he expects me to constantly buy him food and he always gets himself the nicest things in the menu that are more costly. Today I told him to pick something cheaper because I dont have a lot and he got mad and is now refusing to speak to me. Some guidance or advice would be appreciated and prayer. Im upset over this myself because I think he is being unfair. I didnt say no to buying just for him to be more considerate and it upset him.

We hear your heart and the frustration you’re carrying in this season of your marriage. The Word of God calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church, sacrificially, tenderly, and with deep consideration (Ephesians 5:25). It also instructs wives to respect their husbands (Ephesians 5:33), but respect does not mean silence when needs or concerns arise. You are not wrong for speaking up about fairness in how resources are shared, especially when you are both contributing to the household. The early Church in Acts 2:44-45 showed us a model of believers sharing what they had so that no one was in need. While your situation is different, the principle of mutual care and consideration remains.

It’s concerning that your husband responded with anger and silence rather than dialogue. Proverbs 15:1 tells us that a gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. His reaction may reflect deeper issues of pride, entitlement, or a lack of understanding of biblical partnership in marriage. You are not his servant or his child, you are his wife, his equal in Christ, and your voice matters. It’s also important to recognize that living with extended family can add layers of complexity, but it should not erase the primary commitment between husband and wife. Genesis 2:24 says, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife.” This doesn’t always mean physically leaving, but it does mean that the marriage bond must be honored above all other family ties.

We must gently but firmly rebuke the spirit of selfishness and entitlement that seems to be at work here. Your husband is called to lead with love, not demand with expectation. He should be the first to consider your needs, not the last. You are not responsible for funding his desires while neglecting your own basic needs. That is not biblical stewardship, it’s exploitation. The Lord sees your labor, both in the home and now in the workplace, and He does not overlook your faithfulness. He calls us to live justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him (Micah 6:8).

Let us pray together now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this sister and her marriage. Lord, You see the weariness in her heart and the injustice she has endured. We ask that You soften her husband’s heart and open his eyes to the ways he has not loved her as You command. Give him a spirit of humility and gratitude, that he may honor her as his equal and cherish her as a gift from You. Father, we rebuke the spirit of selfishness and entitlement that has taken root in this home. We declare that this marriage is covered by the blood of Jesus, and we speak restoration, unity, and mutual respect over it.

Lord, give this sister wisdom and courage to speak the truth in love, and grant her husband ears to hear. Help them to communicate with kindness and understanding, not anger or silence. Provide them with godly counsel if needed, and lead them into a season of healing and renewal. Remind them both that marriage is a reflection of Christ and the Church, selfless, sacrificial, and full of grace. Strengthen her faith, Lord, and let her know that You are her Provider and Defender. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

We encourage you to seek a quiet moment with your husband when emotions have settled. Approach him with a gentle spirit, not to accuse, but to share your heart. You might say something like, “I love you, and I want us to build a marriage that honors God. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the expectation to provide for you while also managing my own needs. Can we talk about how we can support each other better?” If he remains resistant, consider involving a pastor or trusted Christian counselor who can help guide you both toward biblical principles of marriage and stewardship.

Remember, sister, you are not alone. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). He sees your tears, hears your prayers, and will not abandon you. Keep your eyes on Him, and trust that He is working even in this difficult season. Your worth is not defined by how much you give or how little you receive, it is defined by the love of Christ, who gave everything for you. Stand firm in that truth.

My advice would be to forgive him and if he gets mad again stay calm and don't get angry back otherwise things could escalate. Try to pray to soften his heart, I will do it in the prayer soon. But, don't be upest and he may be being unfair but that is what sin does. I pray that the Lord softens his hearts and that he learns to clean up and help you around the house, I pray you are filled with peace and joy, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
