Marriage Under Attack

The pain of a covenant betrayed cuts deeply, and what you are enduring right now is a profound breaking of what God designed to be a lifelong union. When a husband disregards his role and the vows he made before the Lord, it is a serious thing. The Scripture reminds us that the fear of the Lord is the very summation of knowledge, it is to hate evil because God hates evil. A man who no longer fears God has lost that true beginning of wisdom. He has received counsel that leads away from accountability, and in doing so he has trampled on something holy.

Yet in the midst of this abandonment, the foundation upon which you must stand is not the faithfulness of a man but the faithfulness of God. The old covenant was predicated on human obedience, and it was faulty because man did not remain faithful. But God inaugurated a new covenant through Jesus Christ. This new covenant is not written on tables of stone but on the fleshly tablets of our hearts. It is based upon the finished work of Christ and the promises of a God who cannot lie. Your standing as His child is secure not because your husband kept his word, but because your Heavenly Father always keeps His.

Because of that, you have access to every spiritual resource to walk through this. We are called to be imitators of God, forgiving as we have been forgiven in Christ. This does not make light of the sin or pretend the wound isn't real. It means you release the ultimate judgment to the One who judges righteously. The Lord knows a wife’s deep need to be loved supremely and to live in the security of that love. Right now, that supreme, secure love is found perfectly in Christ. Place the man who has broken this trust into God’s hands. God takes a marriage covenant seriously, reminding us that what He has joined together, no one is to separate. While you wait and pray, hold fast to the profession of your faith without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

God’s original design for marriage remains beautiful and unchanging: a monogamous, lifelong union where a husband and wife belong fully to one another. While that gift has been marred here by sin, the God who heals broken hearts can also write His law upon a heart that has grown hard. Continue to bring this before the throne of grace. Do not let the bitterness take root, but keep your eyes fixed on the Mediator of a better covenant. Your calling right now is to abide in Christ, knowing that His grace is sufficient to sustain you, provide for you, and ultimately work out His purposes even in a situation that feels so broken.
