Beloved of All
Mark 2
And again he entered Capernaum after some days; and it was heard that he was in the house.
And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and he was preaching the word to them.
And they come, bringing to him a paralytic, who was being carried by four.
And not being able to come near him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was; and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
But there were some of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
“Why does this man speak thus? He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
And immediately Jesus, knowing in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you reason these things in your hearts?
Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed, and walk’?
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—
“I say to you, rise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”
And he rose up, and immediately took up the bed, and went forth before them all; so that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, “We never saw it on this fashion.”
And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude came to him, and he taught them.
And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he arose and followed him.
And it came to pass, as he sat at meat in his house, that many tax collectors and sinners sat down with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many, and they followed him.
And when the scribes of the Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with the tax collectors and sinners?”
When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a physician, but the sick.
Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but thy disciples fast not?”
And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
No one puts a piece of a new garment on an old garment; for the patch taken from the new garment both tears the new, and also the piece from the new does not agree with the old.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; else the new wine will burst the skins, and be spilled, and the skins will perish.
But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved.
No one also, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’”
And he was teaching on the sabbath day, and there was a man whose right hand was withered.
And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.
But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Rise, and stand forth in the midst.”
And he arose and stood forth. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the sabbath day to do good, or to do harm? to save life, or to kill?”
And looking round about on them all, he said to the man, “Stretch forth thy hand.” And he did so; and his hand was restored whole as the other.
But they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples; and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,
and Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also became a traitor.
And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;
and those who were troubled with unclean spirits: and they were healed.
And the whole multitude sought to touch him; for power went forth from him, and healed them all.
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh.
Blessed are you, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake.
Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven; for in the like manner did their fathers to the prophets.
But woe to you that are rich! for you have received your consolation.
Woe to you that are full now! for you shall hunger. Woe to you that laugh now! for you shall mourn and weep.
Woe to you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.”
But you, when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next: for verily I say to you, you shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of Man be come.
The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.
It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light: and what you hear in the ear, preach upon the housetops.
And fear not them that kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows.
Everyone therefore who shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven.
But whoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven.
Think not that I came to send peace on the earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
and a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.
He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
And he that does not take his cross, and follow after me, is not worthy of me.
He that finds his life shall lose it: and he that loses his life for my sake shall find it.
He that receives you receives me, and he that receives me receives him who sent me.
He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.
And whoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say to you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, the multitudes were astonished at his teaching;
for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
