We lift you up before the Lord together and we thank you for sharing your heart with us in this challenging second year of teaching first grade. We understand how overwhelming it can feel to manage so many little hearts and behaviors at once while also navigating difficult dynamics with coworkers and administration, and we want you to know God sees your labor and your desire to do well for these children.
We are reminded that teaching young children is a high calling and a great responsibility. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men Colossians 3:23. And we are promised wisdom when we ask for it, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him James 1:5. We pray you will daily seek that wisdom for classroom management, for patience, and for discernment in dealing with adults as well.
For your class we pray for order and peace and for your strength not to grow weary. Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up Galatians 6:9. For the frequent bathroom breaks and distractions and not listening the first time, we encourage you to establish clear, consistent, loving structures and routines. First graders thrive on predictable expectations, visual schedules, and gentle but firm follow through. Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it Proverbs 22:6. This training includes teaching them to listen the first time, to respect instruction, and to manage their bodies with self control, all done with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love Ephesians 4:2. A consistent bathroom schedule, clear signals for attention, and positive reinforcement for following directions can reduce disruption while showing Christ like patience.
For the bossy students and the child who is overly sensitive and cries and gets offended easily, we pray for tender yet firm shepherding. Each child is uniquely made and some need extra help learning kindness, sharing, and resilience. We pray you can model and teach them to prefer one another in honor and to bear with one another, and to help the sensitive child learn to handle disappointment without shame. For the children who refuse to come to school and involve parents over every little thing, we pray for healing in those homes and for parents who will support your authority and encourage their children to respect school. We pray also for those sensitive parents you mentioned, that communication with them would be seasoned with grace and truth, and that you would have wisdom to set loving boundaries while keeping the door open for partnership.
For your coworkers who act as bullies and for administration where you feel discriminated against and micromanaged, we pray for your protection and peace. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18. We encourage you to continue to do excellent work as unto the Lord, to document fairly, to seek wise counsel, and to respond with respect even when you feel unfairly treated. We pray the Lord will soften hearts around you, convict where there is wrongdoing, and give you favor. Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7, and remember In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7.
Regarding the parent who keeps asking to volunteer and you do not feel comfortable, we gently want to encourage you here. Instead of praying she simply stops and gets busy, we pray for God’s wisdom to handle this with both grace and healthy boundaries. It is right to have boundaries in your classroom for order and safety, and it is also right to love parents and not view them as a nuisance. We pray you can communicate kindly and clearly with administration about your volunteer policy, have consistent rules that apply to all, and if needed redirect her help to other appropriate ways without resentment. Love covers and guides even uncomfortable relationships.
We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by putting our faith in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we are saved and that our prayers are heard. We encourage you to bring every need in His precious name.
We now pray together.
Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You for our fellow teacher. We ask You to pour out wisdom, patience, energy, and joy over her as she shepherds these first graders. Give her clear strategies for classroom order, help the children learn to listen, to focus, to be kind and not bossy, and to grow in resilience. Comfort the sensitive hearts and teach them courage. Touch the homes where children resist coming to school and give parents wisdom and support for their children and respect for their teacher. We pray for peace with coworkers and administration, that You would bring justice where there is discrimination, humility where there is bullying, and freedom from harsh micromanagement. Give her favor and a calm spirit. Give her wisdom and grace regarding the parent who wants to volunteer, help her set loving, firm, and fair boundaries, and let that relationship be redeemed for good. Guard her heart from discouragement and anxiety and fill her with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Help her to work heartily for You and to see fruit in due season. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
