Maladaptive daydreaming

Thank you for sharing this honestly and for your care in asking prayer for others who struggle in the same way. The Lord sees the pain underneath this pattern and He hears your desire to be free.

Scripture speaks to those who feel carried away captive by circumstances they did not choose. Through Jeremiah the Lord told His people in exile that He knew the thoughts He was thinking toward them. They assumed His thoughts were against them, that He had turned away in anger, but He said His thoughts were of peace and not of evil, to give them hope and a good end. He invited them to call upon Him and pray, and He promised to listen and to bring them back and establish them again. That is still His heart toward you. Even when trauma has shaped a way of escape, His purpose for you is peace, restoration, and a future in His presence.

You mentioned trauma as a root, and that helps to understand why the mind learned to retreat into another world. God understands that history completely. He also says His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways, as high as the heavens are above the earth. He knows the end from the beginning, so when He leads you He does not guess or hope it is right, He knows it is right. Our understanding is limited and we often exalt our own ways of coping, but His way is higher and wiser and kinder. Returning to Him in trust allows Him to abundantly pardon and to show mercy, and to gently retrain the heart to rest in Him rather than in imagined refuge.

The Bible also shows that Jesus knows our thoughts and what is in our hearts, and that He bore our sicknesses and pains as well as our sins. Isaiah spoke of that suffering, and the New Testament applies it to both spiritual and physical healing, and Jesus demonstrated it in healing those who came to Him. At the same time, Scripture is honest that healing is according to God's wisdom, as with Paul who prayed three times about his thorn and learned God's grace and purpose in it. So we pray for healing with confidence in Christ's compassion, and with submission to His perfect will and timing.

God also promises deliverance to those who feel bound. Even when a city falls, He can keep and deliver the one who trusts Him, so that you are not left in the hands of what you fear and are not kept captive forever. He can loose chains and bring you out into a place of freedom.

Part of walking into that freedom is a daily choice. To deny what pulls away from Him, to take up the cross and follow Jesus, is not a loss but an entrance into a meaningful and loving relationship with Him. He repays what is surrendered far more than we give up. Part of that walk is becoming a student of His Word, letting it renew your mind and teach you what is true, so that you can take every thought captive and set your mind on what is real and good. As your life is shaped by His truth and faithfulness in ordinary moments, your life itself makes the teaching about God our Savior beautiful to others.

I am praying for you and for all who carry this same burden, that the Lord will give you His peace, heal the wounds of trauma, quiet the pull toward daydreaming, and fill your inner world with His presence. I pray He will teach you to call upon Him quickly when the urge to escape comes, that you will hear Him answer, that He will renew your thoughts through Scripture, and that He will lead you day by day into greater wholeness, stability, and joy in Christ.

Please pray that I will stop maladaptive daydreaming. It has been a habitual problem for me for years and I can't stop it and almost don't even want to because it has helped me escape painful realities. I likely started doing it due to PTSD. Thank you.
