M ears gone a bit deaf

Thank you for letting us know about the change in your hearing and for asking for prayer. Losing hearing is discouraging and it affects so much of daily life, and we want to bring your need before the Lord with you and ask Him for His mercy and help.

We do believe that God heals and that healing is for today. Scripture shows us Jesus going about doing good and healing every sickness and every disease among the people, and Matthew connects that healing ministry to the prophecy in Isaiah that He Himself bore our infirmities and sicknesses. Because Jesus has borne our griefs and infirmities, we can come to Him confidently and ask Him to touch the body He created.

At the same time there is much about healing we do not fully understand. We do not always know why some are healed instantly and others are not, and we should not presume that God wills instant healing in every case in the way we expect. The apostle Paul prayed three times concerning his thorn in the flesh and learned that God had a different purpose in that affliction. It would be wrong to tell someone who is not yet healed that there must be sin in their life or that they lack faith. Those explanations are not scriptural and they bring unnecessary burden.

One thing Scripture does show us is that healing is not always instantaneous. There is one recorded miracle where Jesus laid His hands on a blind man and the man was only partly restored at first and then saw clearly after Jesus touched him again. That reminds us that God sometimes works gradually. We also believe that any true healing process is divine, even when it comes through natural means. God established the processes of healing within our bodies, and He who created nature can work through nature. A hearing aid or medical help is not less spiritual, God often uses those very means as part of His provision, and we thank Him for them while still asking Him to restore what has been lost.

We also know that faith matters, not as a frenzy or a show, but as a quiet trust that releases itself to Jesus. In the Gospels many people were healed as they reached out to Him in faith, and that reaching was the point at which they received what He was able to give. There can be a general belief that God is able, and then there is that moment when faith is actively entrusted to Him for your own need. We encourage you to bring your hearing to Him in that simple, trusting way.

So we will pray for you, asking the Lord to restore your hearing according to His wisdom and love, whether by His immediate touch or by a gradual work through the means He has provided. We ask Him to guide those who are advising you, to give you peace as you wait on Him, and to make His presence and power known in your life. If He brings improvement, let it be a testimony to His goodness. If the healing comes more slowly, may you still know His sustaining grace and His care for every detail of your life.

Father, in the name of Jesus we bring this need to You. You know how hearing has diminished in these recent months and how much is missed because of it. You bore our infirmities and You have power over every part of the body You made. We ask You to lay Your hand upon these ears and restore hearing as it pleases You. Work whether instantly or gradually, and let Your healing be known in body and mind and heart. Give wisdom, comfort and hope while waiting, and help trust to remain in You. We ask this in Jesus name, amen.
