Lust, phonograph and mustubation

We have read your request with heavy hearts and we thank you for your honesty in confessing this struggle. We grieve with you over the damage that lust, pornography and masturbation have brought to your marriage, and we want to stand with you in prayer for repentance, cleansing and restoration.

The Bible is very clear that these things are sin and they do great harm to the soul and to marriage. Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. Pornography is not a harmless outlet, it is adultery of the heart and it defiles the marriage bed which God calls to be held in honor among all, and to be undefiled in Hebrews 13:4. We are commanded in Ephesians 5:3 that sexual immorality, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be mentioned among you, as becomes saints. And we are told in 1 Corinthians 6:18 to flee sexual immorality, for every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.

Masturbation, when done apart from your spouse and fueled by lust and pornographic images, is a form of sexual immorality and impurity. It turns the gift of intimacy, which God designed for the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, into a selfish act that feeds lust rather than love. It trains the heart to seek self gratification instead of self giving love for your spouse. For years you have been sowing to the flesh, and the Bible warns that the flesh wars against the Spirit in Galatians 5:16-17, but we also hold out hope to you that sin does not have to have dominion over you any longer in Romans 6:14.

We also noticed that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and find forgiveness and power to overcome. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12 we are told there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Without repentance and faith in Jesus, who died for our sins and rose again, we remain under the power of sin. If you have not already done so, we urge you to confess your sin to God, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ with your heart and confess with your mouth that God raised Him from the dead in Romans 10:9, and you will be saved and receive the Holy Spirit to help you walk in purity.

There is forgiveness for you. In 1 John 1:9 we are promised if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. God does not want to condemn you but to cleanse you and restore what the enemy has tried to destroy in Joel 2:25.

We want to encourage you to take radical steps of repentance. Jesus taught to cut off what causes us to stumble. That means removing all access to pornography, installing accountability software, putting your computer and phone in open places, fleeing youthful lusts in 2 Timothy 2:22, and making no provision for the flesh in Romans 13:14. We urge you to walk by the Spirit in Galatians 5:16 so you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh, by daily prayer, fasting, and feeding on the Word. Bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ in 2 Corinthians 10:5. We also urge you to confess to a trusted godly pastor or mature Christian brother and to your spouse where appropriate, for in James 5:16 we are told to confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. Pursue your spouse in love, honor and cherish your marriage covenant, and seek Christian counseling together to rebuild trust through forgiveness in Ephesians 4:32.

We now pray together for you.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, asking for Your mercy and cleansing for our brother. We confess with him that he has sinned against You through lust, pornography and masturbation, and that this has wounded his marriage and grieved Your Holy Spirit. Lord, forgive him as he confesses, wash him clean by the blood of Jesus, and create in him a clean heart in Psalm 51:10. Break the chains of addiction that have held him for so many years, for You have promised that if the Son sets us free, we will be free indeed in John 8:36. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit and give him strength to flee temptation and to say no to the flesh. Help him to set his mind on things above and to walk in purity and self control. Lord, we pray for his marriage, that You would heal the hurt, restore trust, rekindle godly love and intimacy between husband and wife, and make their marriage a testimony of Your redeeming grace. Give his spouse a heart to forgive as You have forgiven us, and knit them together again in unity. Teach him to love his wife as Christ loved the church in Ephesians 5:25. Guard his eyes and his heart, provide godly accountability, and let him live henceforth for Your glory. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

Thank you for reaching out so honestly. To carry this for years and to see the damage in your marriage must feel heavy and discouraging, and we are grateful you brought it into the light to ask for prayer.

We want you to know you are not alone in this struggle. A lot of men find that lust, pornography and masturbation start as a way to cope or escape, but over time it leaves them feeling out of control and distant from the people they love most. Wanting to stop and not knowing how to stay free is a painful place to be, and shame can make it harder to reach out.

Healing tends to be gradual, not instant, which is why steady support matters so much. One practical step that helps many is to stop trying to fight this privately. If you do not already have it, consider asking a trusted pastor or Christian counselor to walk with you, and look for a small, confidential accountability group where you can be honest weekly. That kind of regular, face to face support can help you stay consistent when willpower alone fades, and it also gives space to address the deeper hurts underneath. If your wife is open, she may also benefit from her own supportive counsel as you both seek next steps.

We are praying for you.

Father, we lift our brother to You. You see his sorrow over his marriage and his desire to be free. Give him courage to stay honest, wisdom to seek faithful help, and strength to walk one day at a time. Bring healing, guard his heart and mind, and lead him and his wife toward Your grace and direction. In Jesus name, amen.

Your honest and sorrowful confession has been heard, and it is right that you should mourn what has wounded your soul and your marriage. To indulge lust of the flesh, to give yourself to the phonograph of unclean images and to the solitary act which God never ordained, is to sin against your own body and against the covenant you made before God, and it is no wonder that your marriage has felt the ruin of it. Yet the very grief you express is a hopeful sign, for the Lord does not despise a broken and contrite heart.

I have known the backslider who has indulged some lust of the flesh to chasten his soul after it, so that the very mention of it has brought tears into his eyes and he could not bear even to think of it. The Holy Spirit can give you back more than your former purity. This is what we call perfect restoration. Peter was down, but he was soon up again, and his story is rather his restoration than his fall. When he denied his Lord, a look from Christ severed him from the crowd, and the crowing of the cock awakened him, and he went out and wept bitterly. He left the warmth of the fire where he had sought comfort among the enemies of Christ. That going out and that weeping were the first signs of his restoration, wrought because Jesus had prayed for him, saying, I have prayed for you.

So it must be with you. That same Lord Jesus who prayed for Peter prays for all who are His, and if He prays, He will win His suit with the Father and lift you from where Satan has sifted you. You will not be restored by making light of this sin or by continuing in it, but by turning from it with abhorrence, by forsaking every provision for the flesh, by cutting off the sources of temptation, by setting a guard upon your eyes and your solitude, and by casting yourself wholly upon Christ for mercy. There is salvation through Jesus Christ alone, and His blood can cleanse the conscience that pornography has defiled.

Concerning your marriage, remember what God has joined. Marriage is not a mere convenience but a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, cemented by mutual love, in which the two become one. Sex and living together belong within that covenant alone. What has broken fellowship must be confessed not only to God but, in humble honesty, to your wife as far as wisdom and pastoral counsel direct, seeking her forgiveness and committing yourself anew to faithfulness, purity and self denying love. The Lord who says, I am married unto you, can teach you to love as He loves, faithfully and purely.

Therefore flee from these lusts. Put away every image and device that feeds them. Bring your body under subjection. Walk in the light with a faithful brother or pastor to whom you are accountable. Give yourself to the Word and to prayer, especially when temptation presses, and look to Christ until His look of love breaks your heart and binds it anew.

We pray for you now, that the Lord would have mercy upon you, forgive you through the blood of the Lamb, cleanse you and restore to you a pure heart, that He would heal what has been wounded in your marriage, give you strength to walk in holiness, and make you afterwards one who, like Peter after his restoration, can strengthen your brethren by warning them not to wander and by testifying of the peace and rest that are found in Christ alone. May He keep you from falling back, and make you a better husband and a more faithful follower ever afterwards.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
