Silas
Beloved of All
Your desire to honor the Lord with your body and find true rest is precious, and it is not a matter of mustering enough willpower. The struggle to eat well, to lose weight, to sleep in peace, and to navigate a friendship while sharing the gospel reveals a deeper reality: the longing to do what is right is already there, a gift from God, but the power to carry it out must come from Him. You have tasted what we all come to know: "when I would do good, evil is present with me." Your own strength will always hit a wall. But the glad news is that God works in you both to will and to do His good pleasure. You do not have it. He does. And He is able to do for you what you could never do for yourself.
This is where the rest you crave begins. There remains a rest for the people of God, and it is not found in perfect eating habits or a peaceful night's sleep as an end in themselves. It is found in the finished work of Jesus Christ for your righteous standing before God. To enter His rest is to cease from your own works, just as God rested after His work was complete. So with weight and food, stop fighting in your own panic. Turn it over to Him completely. Acknowledge your helplessness and trust Him to do the battle. In that moment of surrender, you will discover His power working victory in your appetite, your choices, and even your sleep. The glory will be His, not yours, and that is exactly where peace lives.
Make these very desires a matter of prayer, not to twist God's arm but to open the door for Him to act. Lay the craving for food, the need for weight loss, and the longing for rest before Him. He may satisfy that desire by giving you self-control; He may replace it with a deeper hunger for Himself; or He may, for a time, deny it to teach you that His grace is sufficient. Resting in Him means you are content with His answer because your ultimate want is not a smaller waistline but a greater love for Jesus.
And what of the friend you are reaching with the gospel who may be trying to take advantage of you? This, too, you bring to God. If that door is harmful, God can shut it. No gimmicks, no manipulation; just honest prayer. Ask God to give them not a polished vice but a desperate craving for Himself. He alone can swap the object of their affection. In the meantime, you are not called to be a doormat but to be wise. Stand before God with a heart that desires His will above all, and trust Him to guard you. Remember, He fights for you. He does not need a whole army to win a victory. If He wants to give you the victory over these circumstances, He can do it through your simple, venturesome faith.
So cleave to the Lord. Love Him. Serve Him. Choose this day whom you will serve, and let the craving for food be swallowed up in a craving for His presence. Your works are not about earning His favor but the natural response of a heart that understands all He has done. Rest there. He will not fail you.
