Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You give thanks for life and for answered prayers, and this is right. But do not think that God’s favour is released merely by crying out as in a marketplace; the prayer that wins His ear is offered with a quiet and orderly heart. You ask for a turnaround in business and for strange doors to open. Begin each day by making God propitious through prayer and supplication, for the market is a tempest and prayer is a great weapon.
Yet many say, “While we are here we are awed, but when we go out, the flame is quenched.” Why? Because as soon as they leave the assembly, they plunge into business unsuited to what they have heard, instead of taking the Scripture and meditating with their household. If you would have favour upon your husband’s documents and your child’s exams, then let every request and every task be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the Father. Invoke the Son, and the Father is invoked.
But never say, “What need have I of prayer?” Even Paul needed the prayers of the saints, and Peter was delivered when the church prayed earnestly. The one who feels no need is in the greatest danger. Ask, then, but ask with a watching soul, not sleeping in sin. And when you seek to have your prayer fire restored, know that the flame is fed not by many words but by carrying what you gain here into your home and your daily affairs.
Our Lord himself prayed, not from weakness, but to show that his will is one with the Father’s. So give thanks always, and let your petitions be made with humble trust, for he who gave you life will supply what is needful for both body and soul.
