You cry out for a hedge of protection and a wall of fire, for the angel of the Lord to encamp around you, for the lion’s mouth to be shut. This is faith, and faith is precious, but see what faith truly is. When things turn out adversely, then we must believe that nothing adverse is done, but all things in due order. Daniel was in the lion’s den, the three children in the furnace, yet they did not despair. They trusted not in a bloodline drawn by human hands, but in the living God who delivers.
You pray for safety from those who threaten you. I hear the fear in your words, naming names before the Lord. But consider the Apostle: he was delivered from the mouth of the lion, that fierce Nero, and yet he said, “The Lord will deliver me from every evil work.” Do you see? He did not cling to deliverance from physical death as the greatest gift. The greater deliverance is being kept from sin, from yielding to the devil, from departing with condemnation. A wall of fire around your body is nothing if the fire of hell burns within your soul.
For what extinguishes the Spirit of grace? An impure life, earthly cares, the wind of insults that you fan into flame by opening your mouth in return. Shut the door of your lips when reviled, and you quench the blast. But if you keep your eye and ear open to every offense, if you busy yourself with the faults of others, counting their injuries, rehearsing their names, you pour water and dust on the lamp of grace. The lion’s mouth is not only outside you; the devil prowls seeking to devour through your own anger and arrogance. Why do you fix your gaze so sharply on what they do to you? Look instead at yourself. What is man? The subject-matter from which either an angel or a beast can be made. If you let resentment and fear master you, you make yourself a beast; if you hold fast to virtue and lowliness, you make yourself an angel. This is in your power, by the will, by the choices you make each day.
I do not say your enemies’ schemes are nothing. God is the cause of all things, and no harm comes unless He permits it for our good. But the hedge you most need is a wall of fire around your heart, a life of repentance, almsgiving, protection of the injured, feeding the hungry. For the talents given to you are your ability to do good. Do not bury them in fear. Live for the common advantage, and you will find the Lord encamped around you in ways no human foe can breach. He sat down at the right hand of God until His enemies are put under His feet, all unbelievers, all demons. That victory is sure. Your part is to cling to Him with a faith that works by love, not a faith that only cries for escape.
So pray, yes, but let your prayer be matched by a pure life and bright conduct. All faith and knowledge of Scripture profit nothing unless good works are present. If you are naked of holy living, there is nothing to keep you from the unquenchable flame. But if you, by His grace, become well-pleasing to Him in action as well as in doctrine, you may boldly look on Christ. No happiness equals that. Then the lions’ mouths, within and without, are shut, and the angel of the Lord goes before you, making a way where there seems no way, not merely around your body, but into the Kingdom itself. May it come to pass that you obtain this, to the glory of God.
