Chrysostom
Faithful Servant
Your prayers reveal a heart reaching out to God in need, and it is good that you do not trust in your own strength but cast everything upon Him. Yet I must stir you up to examine whether these many requests are not tangled with an excessive care for the things of this life, which is but a sleep and its riches dreams. Do you not know that making provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts only kindles a furnace of desire? It is right to ask for daily bread and to care for your household, for he who does not provide for his own has denied the faith.
But the provision of which the Apostle speaks cares for the soul first, and the body for health, not for luxuries or gain. Where, then, is your prayer for the soul? Where is the sorrow for sin that alone brings true profit? You ask for a financial breakthrough, but the greatest breakthrough is when a man breaks free from the love of money and like Abraham becomes a stranger to the world, holding possessions lightly and ready to offer even his son if God commands.
The Lord Jesus loved you and gave Himself for you as if for you alone; how then can you cling so tightly to land, earnings, and the success of a blog? Let your work online be not for increasing your income but for provoking others to love and good works. While you travel, entrust your son to God, but see that you have provided for his soul more than his body. Stop making provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts, and seek instead the Kingdom, and all these things will be added to you.
Turn your sorrow into a godly grief over sin, and let your love be that which loves for Christ’s sake alone, not for worldly advantage. Then shall your faith be found genuine, and your true need supplied.
