Chrysostom
Good and Faithful Servant
Your requests are many, and rightly do you cry out for the mercy of the Lord. But consider: the open doors you seek are not opened by anxious planning, but by prayer and praise rising from a heart at peace, even in affliction. Remember Paul and Silas, scourged and thrust into the inner prison, their feet fastened in the stocks. At midnight they did not groan over their wounds or scheme for release; they prayed and sang hymns to God. And then the foundations shook, the doors flew open, and every chain fell off. Trust that the Lord who granted them such a marvelous deliverance has not grown weary in hearing you. But do not expect promotion and progress while you sleep in soft beds of spiritual ease. Their freedom came through vigil and song in the dark, not through fretting over tomorrow.
You ask for a godly life partner. This is not a small request, for marriage is a household, a little church. One who would rule well in that sacred estate must first learn to rule his own passions with all gravity. If a man cannot keep his own children in subjection, how shall he care for the Church of God? So too, if you have not yet learned to govern your own desires, to make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts, do not imagine that a spouse will quiet the restlessness within you. Seek one who will join you not in wantonness, but in the sober care of the body for health alone. And while you wait, be busy with the talent you have now. Do not say, “I have only one talent; I can do nothing.” You can show mercy, and mercifulness is a queen who needs no permission to enter the gates of heaven. She breaks chains, quenches fire, and brings you near to God. What career promotion can compare to that?
The poverty of idleness complains and steals; the poverty of the diligent works with its hands and has enough. If you desire wisdom and open doors, labor not merely for bread that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life. In all your decisions, remember that the present life is a dream. The rich man who counts his coins at night wakes to find them dust. The one who schemes for honor finds his house turned upside down by a single sunbeam of calamity. Set your mind on things above, and the things of earth will be added in due measure. I pray that the Lord accomplishes His purpose for you, not by granting every request in the shape you imagine, but by shaping you into a vessel fit for His kingdom. Stand with me, then, in such prayer.
